WED 7/14: Book, Film, Classical, Fun, Rock, Blues

Maybe it won't rain tonight, because there is some outdoor cheapness planned.

Happy Bastille Day!

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 7/14

6pm
"To Kill a Mockingbird": Panel Discussion & Screening
at Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$10

People began loving Harper Lee's novel 50 years ago as well as the movie that came out two years later. A panel discussion talks about the themes before a screening with Scout, her dad, Boo Radley, and so on.

Tickets available at Harvard Book Store and by phone at 617-661-1515

WED 7/14

7pm
Landmarks Orchestra, "Beethoven's Ninth"
at Hatch Shell, Storrow Dr, Boston (Charles River Esplanade)
FREE

It's that famous symphony by Ludwig Van B accompanied by the New World Chorale.

Also to be performed: Beethoven's "Consecration of the House" Overture

Rain Location: Kresge Auditorium (MIT campus)

WED 7/14

7pm
"Davis Square Recess"
at Parking lot, Herbert St & Day St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
FREE

The Davis Square farmers market is not in session, and some people have noticed that people aren't parking in the lot. So some people thought about having recess-style fun for kids of all ages.

The organizers are bringing some equipment, but feel free to " bring your own chalk, jumprope, hula hoop, foursquare ball, wiffle bat, frisbee, etc..."

WED 7/14

The Love Language (11pm), Mean Creek (10pm), David Dondero (9pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10

The Love Language has had people falling under their lo-fi indie-pop spell since the first CD of break-up song was released last year. I think it didn't even work on getting the ex-girlfriend back, but the band has a new album out already.

They're joined by the big, gorgeous slightly rootsy 'n spacey rock of Mean Creek who were recently named the "Best Local Act" by The Phoenix. Singer-songwriter David Dondero also hails from North Carolina like The Love Language.

WED 7/14

9:30pm
Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers
at Milky Way Lounge/Bella Luna, 284 Amory St, Jamaica Plain (The Brewery Complex)
FREE

Erin Harpe plays the hell out of the acoustic-fingerstyle blues of the early 1900's, and now she has a band joining her two sets tonight and another Wednesday next month. This group has the feel of early WWII blues bands that are just a couple evolutionary steps from rock 'n roll. And it sounds fantastic.

Minor correction: the Davis Square farmers market is now in session on Wednesdays, and it's great! But it's only open from 11AM to 6PM. The parking lot stays empty for another couple of hours afterward ...
