MON 8/1: Salsa, Lebowski, Music, Drag

There is plenty of cheapness I'm probably missing, but am still having trouble focusing after my brother's wedding. Have fun!

A couple of these options might take you out of your comfort zone, and maybe that's just what you need at the beginning of the work week...

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 8/1

6:15pm to 9pm
Salsa in the Park 2011
at Blackstone Community Center courtyard, 50 West Brookline St., Boston (South End)
FREE

Feat: DJ Hernan

6:15pm -- Lessons for all levels
7:15pm -- Additional lessons for beginners
There are 4 more weeks of salsa dancing in the fresh air.

Everyone is welcome. Supposedly hundreds of people of all ages would come out last year...

MON 8/1

7pm
"The Big Lebowski": Screening & Party
at Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline
$9.75 ($10.25 advance, but worth it)

I think this sells out almost every year. Once I was shut out at the door, and they sold out in advance last year.

There will, of course, be a best costume contest; so you might as well dig out your Dude duds or Walter or Jesus or maybe even Maude Lebowski.

Besides Lebowski trivia, the main event will probably be a gauntlet of challenges that started with about 10 teams of two that included "most impassioned Walter rant", "most convincing nihilist quip", "ransom briefcase toss", and "toy bowling".

The film usually starts around 8pm.

MON 8/1

10pm
Chris Warren
at ZuZu!, 474 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE / 21+

As one of the main dudes in Viva Viva, one of Boston's kick-ass bands, Chris Warren gets loud and rough. He played a solo gig at Middlesex Lounge with just a drummer in January; I assume it won't be as loud as usual yet still as awesome.

MON 8/1

10:30pm
"Perestroika"
at Jacque's Cabaret, 79 Broadway St, Boston (South End)
$7 / 21+

Feat: Katya, Nicholle Pride, Madge of Honor

This drag show has been out of rotation since June. Nicholle Pride's alter ego sent me an email about it, so maybe you'll ask yourself, "When was the last time I went to a drag show?"

I won't say it'll be good, clean fun. Who wants clean fun? But it will be a wild time. For those who don't mind watching dancers without the extra plumbing, burlesquer Madge of Honor will be joining the fun tonight.

(I guess I should say it's "cash only" because that was in the message too.)
