SUN 9/12: Carnival, Fests, Art, Music

Okay, Day #5 of Mom's visit. This is what I've got.

--------------------------------------------------------------

SUN 9/12

Noon to 6pm
Cambridge Carnival Parade
from Central Sq to Kendall Sq: about 630 Mass Ave to about 450 Main St, Cambridge
FREE

The parade is fun to watch for colorful outfits and people partying on top of trucks with literal walls of speakers -- because music quality in the Caribbean is judged by sheer volume. My guess is that the mild temps won't discourage anyone from changing their outfits.

When I've gone in the past, there as been a good variety of Island-style food stands at the end of the parade with a couple stages of live music and other vendors.

SUN 9/12

Noon to 6pm
Allston Village Street Fair
on Harvard Ave, from Brighton Ave to Cambridge St, Allston
FREE

At least once per year, this block of Allston is a bastion of family-friendly fun. It's still going to have that special Allston flavor. Among the street performances, activities, arts/crafts, and food vendors; the attraction is catching a wide mix of bands on multiple stages like: Hallelujah The Hills, Three Day Threshold, You Can Be A Wesley, The Murder, Brunt of It, The Have Nots, Tired Old Bones, The Swaggerin' Growlers, and more.

Besides T service, there's free bike valet service and a shuttle from WGBH.

SUN 9/12

2pm to 6pm
East Boston Harvest Festival 2010
at Piers Park, 95 Marginal St, Boston (Eastie)
FREE

Feat: Kingsley Flood, Diver City

Food, music, games, and family activities

SUN 9/12

2:30pm to 5:30pm
Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School Cabaret: Life Drawing Class
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$8 / 18+

Drinking and drawing doesn't get much better.

SUN 9/12

3pm
Fenwick Smith
at Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St, Boston (New England Conservatory/Fenway)
FREE

Flautist Fenwick Smith leads a small ensemble of NEC faculty and recent grads for an annual flute-centric, semester-opening concert.

SUN 9/12

9pm
Jarrod Gorbel, Dave Munro
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$10 / 18+

I'm not familiar with The Honorary Title, but YouTube videos lead me to believe that quite a few people are. Frontman Jarrod Gorbel is doing his solo thing, and it's pretty catchy. Dave Munro aka Air Traffic Controller is one of my favorite local singer-songwriters; he should be heard on radios around the world for all occasions.

SUN 9/12

9:30pm
Colour Revolt, Turbo Fruits, The Okay Win
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / 18+

I dig the eclectic delta-blues-informed indie-rock of Colour Revolt; this is the kind of stuff that improves over longer listening. From what I can tell, some of the guys from Be Your Own Pet has gotten together with a different singer-guitarist as Turbo Fruits. The tunes are still fun, little catchy nuggets of punky-pop. The Okay Win should get the party with some punchy, folky indie-rock.

Turbo Fruits is Jonas Stein from Be Your Own Pet and three other guys from Nashville backing him.
