SAT 10/13

3pm to 6pm
Project YUM: Food Festival Celebrating Local Crops & Global Shops
at Union Sq Plaza, Somerville (nexus of Somerville Ave, Washington St , Bow St)
FREE

First there was MUM, then SUM, now YUM. This is the last outdoor festival in Union Square this year, and it should be a good one. There will be plenty of free tastings of the local/international flavors as well as a cornucopia of food info. Highlights include: 'mix your own masala', 'Dish! A giant interactive culinary map', 'healing powers of foods', pumpkin carving contest, and Balla Kouyate will rock the Malian balafon music at 4:30pm.

There's also an 'Iron Chef'-style between the chefs of Gargoyles, Evoo, & The Independent beginning at 3pm. They'll be given local produce, $75 to spend in local markets, and one hour to see whose cuisine reigns supreme. Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone, a writer from Edible Boston magazine, and an audience member will judge.

As usual, the Saturday Farmers Market will precede the fun from 9am to 1pm.
