Just a Random Message about Happiness

I see this in my Tumblr stream, and realize it relates to my dinner conversation.

TGIF!

THUR 6/30: Beer, Music, Fireworks

Local artist-animator Karen Aqua died in May, and the Brickbottom Gallery is exhibiting hundreds of her drawings as well as video beginning today through SUN 7/10 (except 7/3 & 7/4) from noon to 5pm.

As mentioned yesterday and in the earlier fireworks post, there will be extra-fast boat races in the Harbor from today to Monday.

--------------------------------------------------------------

THUR 6/30

7pm
"Beer Advocate's Beer Tasting Series": Cisco Brewery
at The Hideout / Durgin-Park, 340 Faneuil Hall Market Pl, Boston
FREE

If you're near Faneuil Hall tonight, I'd stop and have a couple drinks. There will be some samples from Cisco Brewery. There should be free apps and shwag.

They say you get a free glass when you buy a pint of Cisco, e.g. the tasty Whale's Tale Pale Ale.

There's another beer thing at Stoddard's Food & Ale that starts at 6pm. There's a $3 cover, but the proceeds go to a charity.

THUR 6/30

7pm to 9pm
Grupo Fantasia
at Mozart Park, about 320 Centre St, Jamaica Plain (near Jackson Sq)
FREE

It's time again for the Tito Puente Latin Music Series to bring live salsa, jazz, etc to different outdoor spaces around town.

You can do worse that hanging out and dancing in a JP park on a summer night. There are 5 more Thursday night shows with a concert at City Hall Plaza in between now and then.

THUR 6/30

NoBunny (11pm), Tampoffs (10pm), Triple Thick (9:15pm), The Party Pigs (8:30pm)
at Church, 69 Kilmarnock St, Boston (Fenway)
$10 / 18+

NoBunny is the man that fronts the band in a sorta creepy rabbit mask (and usually ensembles that Lux Interior might wear when he's on a beer-pizza-ESPN bender). The music is really great, catchy garage-rock that would be awesome fun even without the spectacle.

You'll probably get some antics anyway. Along with more punky garage-rock leading up to the finale.

THUR 6/30

The Ladybug Transistor (11:35pm), Hallelujah The Hills (10:40pm), St. Claire (9:45pm), Cotton Candy (9pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10

On the other side of the river from NoBunny, The Ladybug (Transistor) is performing. Although not quite opposites in my mind, let's say the quirky, thinking-person's indie-pop in Cambridge will provide contrasts to the Boston show.

THUR 6/30

9:15pm
Somerville Fireworks
at Trum Field, about 550 Broadway, Somerville (Magoun Sq)
FREE

Broadway closes, and it's a pretty good display (from my window, at least). Live entertainment begins at 6pm, and Booty Vortex plays at some point before 9:15pm.

The #80 & #89 buses will still take close to the festivities.

THUR 6/30

9:50pm
Extreme Sailing Series: Fireworks
at Boston Harbor (Fan Pier, North End, Eastie, etc)
FREE

I suspect the best viewing is supposed to be at Fan Pier, because that's where the Extreme Sailing races are based.

I also suspect there might be fine viewing anywhere on the Waterfront.

Fireworks: THUR 6/30 to MON 7/4

I love eating and drinking, but pyrothenic bombs bursting in air are what sets Independence Day apart from other summer parties. Oh, and the birthday of the nation...

Besides tonight's fireworks, a few nearby weekend locations are listed below.

There is a statewide PDF list compiled by the Commonwealth (organized by date). I also noticed Boston Events Insider had a detailed list organized by region that covers a wide area (scroll down).

Of course, the Globe has a handy section on their site.

A short Thursday post is coming. Cheapness through Saturday is the calendar.

Did you know about getting into the MFA for free -- all day on Friday?

--------------------------------------------------------------

THUR 6/30

Somerville Fireworks

FREE

SAT 7/2

9:30pm -- Lexington
SUN 7/3
8:30pm -- Gloucester
9pm -- Lynn (Rain date: 7/5)
9:30pm -- Danvers (Rain date: 7/5)
MON 7/4
8pm -- Waltham (Rain date: 7/5)
9pm -- Salem, Beverly, Marblehead (Once, I saw the multiple displays while standing on the Beverly-Salem bridge.)
9pm -- Winthrop
10:30pm -- Boston (of course)

WED 6/29: Harborfest, Slam, Songs, Tetris

I've added some share buttons at the bottom of posts. If they're annoying or seem to cause performance issues, let me know.

For a little over $10, Lenka and Julia Easterlin are performing at Cafe 939 tonight. They don't serve booze, so think of the extra $3 as a beer you didn't buy. FYI: For further proof that a Berklee education doesn't prevent success, Julia is performing at Lollapalooza in August...

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 6/29 (thru MON 7/4)

Various Times
Boston Harborfest
at Various Locations
Many Free or under $10

Let's look at the bottom line. A lot of the events during Harborfest are intended to keep tourists occupied while they wait for the fireworks and Pops concert.

There's nothing wrong with that -- many visitors probably want some guidance after they've walked the Freedom Trail.

Many of this historical/cultural stuff (tours, presentations, reenactments, etc) isn't *that* interesting, or it's more than $10 -- still anyone can go and enjoy this stuff.

There will be "Extreme Sailing" races in the Harbor from THUR 6/30 to MON 7/4. British soldier reenactors will be seen around Boston Common and the vicinity on SAT 7/2. If that isn't enough history for you, a disco band is going to perform at City Hall Plaza on Saturday evening. And it's $12 to get into Chowderfest (7/3) this year, so that's all I'm going to say.

When was the last time you stood on the Constitution?

WED 6/29

8pm
"MBTA Slam"
at Cantab Underground, 738 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Central Sq & Harvard Sq)
$5

Yes, it's easy to slam the T. The trick will be to do it with some craft beyond a rant about the guy who kept on smacking you with his backpack.

At this invitational, slam poets will perform based on the theme and compete. Teams will be representing the Green, Red, Orange, and Blue Lines.

WED 6/29

9pm
"Out of the Woodwork" Acoustic Showcase
at Milky Way Lounge/Bella Luna, 284 Amory St, Jamaica Plain (The Brewery Complex)
FREE

Feat: Heather Foxwell, Reeling Kites, Justin Emile, Anne Warnock, Lauren DeRose

I took a listen to each of these folks, and you should hear some good stuff if you make it down. The plan is for each performer to play 2 short sets and finish around midnight.

WED 6/29

9:30pm
Tetris Tournament
at Good Life, 28 Kingston St, Boston (Downtown Crossing)
FREE

Feat: DJs El Amado, Team Teamwork, Thaddeus Jeffries

Sure, it's the hip-hop that they really want you to go for, but Tetris is addictive. It's supposed to be a "very informal" tournament, although there is a grand prize (dinner for two upstairs in the restaurant).

Besides the DJ's, people will play on 2 Wii's and 2 Atari 2600's.

FRI 7/1: Free MFA Day -- plus future Friday Fun

Photos can be clicked to get a slightly larger idea about the Chihuly exhibit at the MFA.

By the way, at least some cheapness through Saturday is listed on the calendar.

--------------------------------------------------------------

FRI 7/1

10am to 9:45pm
"Free Fun Fridays"
at Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Ave, Boston (Fenway)
FREE

One of my favorite philanthropic initiatives over the last couple summers has to be "Free Fun Fridays".

The Highland Street seems to believe there is value in providing cultural experiences to the people that might not otherwise enjoy them. I agree!

They're starting off the next 9 Fridays of free fun with a bang.

If you're not heading out of town, it's a great chance to see the Chihuly exhibit. FYI: I didn't check to see if there's another 'free day' before it closes in August.

You might (or might not) enjoy the colors and shapes in photos, but the detail and scale must be seen in person to be fully appreciated.

If you haven't been to the MFA since the Arts of the Americas wing opened, an entirely new visit is in store. It may not be a sublime epiphany, but there is a lot more to see than ever before.

Throughout the day there will be guided tours, videos & talks about Dale Chihuly, entertainment & glassblowing demonstrations during the day, and the MFA Summer Fridays 21+ mixer in the courtyard from 5:30pm to 9:30pm.

All free! That's more than $20 in savings...

Keep in mind that over 11,000 showed up for last year's free MFA day, and it wasn't the Friday before Independence Day.

As for Free Fun Fridays in general:

Unlike previous years, there will be 4 options each week through FRI 8/26 all around the Commonwealth.

(This Friday, people on the Cape can get into the Edward Gorey House and the Heritage Museums & Gardens for free. And people are free to roam the Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford.)

There are links and more detail on the site, but here's a list:

FRI 7/8

Plimoth Plantation (Plymouth, duh)
Worcester Art Museum (no comment)
Cape Cod Museum Of Art (Dennis)
New England Historic Genealogical Society (Back Bay)
FRI 7/15
Museum Of Science (Science Park)
Higgins Armory Museum (Worcester)
The Discovery Museums (Acton)
Garden In The Woods (Framingham)
FRI 7/22
Franklin Park Zoo (Dorchester)
The Sports Museum (TD Garden)
Norman Rockwell Museum (Stockbridge)
Peabody Essex Museum (Salem)
FRI 7/29
Boston Children's Museum (Seaport)
American Textile History Museum (Lowell)
New Bedford Whaling Museum (New Bedford)

USS Constitution Museum (Charlestown)
Basketball Hall Of Fame (Springfield)
FRI 8/26
Old Sturbridge Village
New Repertory Theatre (Watertown)
Berkshire Museum (Pittsfield)
Ecotarium (Worcester)
There's also a PDF schedule available.

TUES 6/28: Draw, Laugh, Rock

Well, folks...

Trivia with Team CTB was a success -- in regards to the fun quotient and the score!

If there's any modest way to say it, I don't want to waste my time: We kicked ass in almost category.

A rag-tag tem of Trivia Ninjas (Trivi-ninjas? Ninj-ivias?) joined me at Club Oberon to finish with the highest score going into the "Lightning Round".

So I took the mantle to represent "The Log Ladies" on stage with the other top-3 finishers, and I couldn't ring in fast enough -- and I couldn't think of "Cougar Town".

So we tied for 2nd place, and everyone with at least something whether a book, DVD, a Cafe of India gift card or tix to "The Donkey Show". Thanks to Sophia, Mike, Jessica, and Raymond!

The next Big Quiz Thing at Oberon is MON 7/25.

--------------------------------------------------------------

TUES 6/28

7:30pm to 9:30pm
Dr. Sketchy Boston: Evening Session
at Club Cafe, 209 Columbus Ave, Boston (South End)
$8

Feat: Walter Sickert's Bunny Collaborative

Whether it's the Sunday afternoon or Tuesday evening edition, I doubt there has ever been so much for the crowd to draw. If you've seen Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys, you may have also noticed a whole bunch of people non-musically performing and/or being arty.

Could there be a dozen models? Maybe more, probably less.

These are a couple of tips I copied from the Boston branch at some point:

Come on time to get a seat up front. Keep it small so others can crowd in around you. Bring your stuff in a milk crate so you have something to sit on or put your stuff on. (we have lots of seats, but more is helpful) There will be some fancy paper for you to buy if you want.
Even if there's too much for your art skills, it could be a creatively stimulating... No proficiency required -- just draw and have a good time.

TUES 6/28

9pm
Comedy Night
at Enormous Room, 567 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE

Feat: Lucas O'Neill, Corey Tenchara, Mike Abramson, Rob Crean, Laura Crawford, Sameer Naseem

Of the places where I occasionally suggest non-comedy-club comedy nights, the Enormous Room is probably the most comfortable (and the smallest).

There's a good chance for laughter with line-up. I think Lucas O'Neill is Lucas Lewis who I'll remember fondly for a hilarious townie character I saw one time.

Unlike Great Scott etc, the drinks wouldn't be described as cheap -- but it's free to get in.

TUES 6/28

9:30pm
Bomb The Music Industry!, Cheap Girls, The Fragments
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / All Ages

Kudos to Bomb the Music Industry: I read on the interwebs that they only play all-ages shows with covers of $10 or less. While I didn't want to just describe them as ska-punk because there's other stuff going on, but I'm tryin to keep it short.

They do seem to put on a good live show and have loyal fans.

It's punky fun all night with Fragments and Detroit's Cheap Girls.

MON 6/27: Film, Talk, Music, Trivia

There is usually something worthwhile on Mondays, usually something geeky or some good bands.

The weekend can leave one a bit drained on Monday, but you can rally. Hey, I'm playing trivia tonight...

If you're free tomorrow, maybe you want to be on the waitng list for TEDxBoston.

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 6/27

7pm to 8:30 pm
"Mother Nature's Child": Screening & Discussion
at Hunnewell Building, Arnold Arboretum, 125 Arborway, Jamaica Plain
FREE

The case is made for children spending more time outdoors.

The post-film discussion will be led by the Arboretum's School Programs Manager and Adult Education Manager.

Registration is encouraged.

MON 6/27

7pm to 9:30pm
Boston Skeptics in the Pub
at Tommy Doyle's, 96 Winthrop St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

Feat: Joshie Berger

Tonight's guest was the winner of a reality show called "Worst Cooks in America". That doesn't mean Joshie Berger is the absolute worst cook, but the most improved "awful cook" of the season.

Part of his transformation was learning to like non-kosher food after growing up as a Hasidic Jew even though he hadn't been 'practicing' for many years.

MON 6/27

7pm
Culann's Hounds, The Accordion Babes, Rising Appalachia
at The Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St, Cambridge (Inman Sq)
$10

Several women will be playing accordions with Culann's Hounds and The Accordion Babes in Cajun, Celtic, and folky settings. Rising Appalachia is something like an acoustic/jazzy/funky protest music.

MON 6/27

8pm to 10pm
The Big Quiz Thing
at Club Oberon, 2 Arrow St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

I'll be there around 7:30pm in a red, white, and blue lei on top of my business casual work attire. I think we should be on the same team and kick butt (or not).

Still it's an entertaining trivia game presentation.

MON 6/27

9:30pm
Bozmo, The Big Big Bucks, The Clippers
at O'Brien's, 3 Harvard St, Allston
$7 / 18+

Bozmo is a new band with members who play (or played) with kick-ass bands like Wonderful Spells, Pretty & Nice, and The Toothaches. Together they make a rough pop that falls in the neighborhood of those groups, and it works really well.

The Big Big Bucks and The Clippers rock out too.

MON 6/27

9:30pm
Larcenist, PJ Bond, Brian McGee, Lonesome Republic
at Charlie's Kitchen, 10 Eliot St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$5 / 21+

It seems there are quite a few bands that are out there blending punk and folk/Americana to different degrees like these acts.

SUN 6/26: Sunday Night On-Topic Video

This is an 'on-topic' video, because the Big Quiz Thing is at Club Oberon on Monday night.

I will be there with at least a red-white-n-blue lei around my neck, and I'd love for us to play together.

Whether we win or lose, I will probably try too hard to be self-effacingly charming.

Check out a sample of BQT in NYC:

SUN 6/26: Fests, Cars, Music

I'm a little bummed that The Haven has been serving Scottish food in JP for a year, and I haven't partaken. They're celebrating their 1st anniversary tonight from 8pm on with a DJ and a raffle and good cheer.

--------------------------------------------------------------

SUN 6/26

10am to 5pm
Health & Fitness Expo
at Hynes Convention Center, 900 Boylston St, Boston (Back Bay)
FREE

There are also 3 stages for demonstrations, performances, healthy cooking along with other exhibits and activities. Maybe you'll see Tedy Bruschi or Glen Davis.

If you don't feel like going to the doctor/hospitals, there are various health screenings too.

I don't know if it's just for kids, but I think it would be funny to get in front of the green screen and try a weather forecast.

SUN 6/26

10am to 5pm
Annual Chinatown Main Street Festival
near the Chinatown Arch, 70 Beach St, Boston
FREE

I'm not sure if I've been to this particular Chinatown festival, but -- much like the North End festas in their way -- there is a similarity that blends together.

What it celebrates? I think it translates into "warm weather month".

If you're downtown, you might as well get a bigger-than-usual taste of Chinese arts, culture, and food.

Last time, I did notice the lines for most dim sum places seemed longer than usual.

SUN 6/26

10am to 2pm
British Car Day
at Larz Anderson Auto Museum, 15 Newton St, Brookline
$10 / $5 military, seniors, students, children under 12

There will be other Sundays dedicated to Triumphs (7/31) and MG's/Rovers (8/13), but a car-nucopia of British wheels will roll onto the lawn.

Maybe $10 may seem like a bit much to look at several dozen cars. On the other hand, take a look at this guy's visit in '09. When was the last time you gawked at multiple Jaguars, Bentleys, and Aston-Martins in the same day? I have a feeling there will be other makes like Lotus, MG, Triumph, etc.

SUN 6/26

Noon to 8pm
Joe's Jazz and Blues Fest
at Nathan Tufts Park, Broadway & College Ave Rotary, Somerville (Powderhouse Cir)
FREE

Noon -- The Somerville High School Jazz Ensemble
1pm -- The Anderson/Hanson/Levy Trio
2pm -- John Funkhouser Trio
3pm -- Toni Lynn Washington
4pm -- The Spontaneous Architects
5pm -- Florencia Gonzalez Candombe Project
6pm -- Frank Morey & His Band
Kudos to Mayor Joe to encouraging a jazz and blues festival (and getting his name into the title).

After a week of indoor gigs around town, it could turn out to be a nice day to sit in the park and dig some jazz and blues. It seemed rather evenly balanced between jazz, blues, jazz, blues, jazz, latin jazz, and blues.

There are no slouches in the lineup, and I'm willing to bet the Somerville High ensemble can really play.

SUN 6/26

6:30pm
Yesterday's Heroes, The McGunks, The Tin Thistles, The Caught Flies, Old Hat, David Wells
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$9 / 18+

For those who still want to rage, rage against the dying of the weekend -- yet want to get home at a decent hour -- there's a mix of punks, folky punks, punky rockabilly, and punks who are feeling in an acoustic mood.

SUN 6/26

9pm
"This Has Been A Disaster - Thanks For Having Us": Discussion & Performance
at Toad, 1912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Porter Sq)
FREE

Feat: Aaron Perrino, Drew O'Doherty, Mark William Pearson

Musical guest: The Chrome Dreams

I didn't go to the inaugural session, but I think it's fascinating to hear stories about gigs that have gone awry and other humorous tales of musical woe. All 3 guests have played a lot of shows, so there should be many moments to draw upon.

Rock 'n roll fan & author Steve Almond and Hallelujah The Hills frontman Ryan Walsh will guide the discussion.

I read that The Chrome Dreams is most of Choo Choo La Rouge. (Not my favorite band, but other people seem to like 'em.)

SAT 6/25: Later Half

Do you want to laugh? Do you want to rock?

Or do you want to bike around town with your dangly bits unrestrained?

HEY -- Do you want to play trivia with me on Monday?

--------------------------------------------------------------

SAT 6/25

9pm
June Babies w/ Jimmy Anicet
at Tiki Hideaway, Howard Johnson Fenway, 1271 Boylston St, Boston
$5

Feat: Tim Vargulish, Ted Pettingell, Tom Dunlap, Guitler Raphael, Rob Crean, Andrew Durso, Lillian DeVane, Danny Richardson, Phoebe Angle

Hey, you know how crowded it gets around Fenway when the Sox are playing at home? One could watch the game in Pittsburgh where they have gigantic screens, but I like normal TV's at Tiki Hideaway. It is hidden, and the vibe is laid-back even during home games.

Towards the end of the game, a bunch of people will just start being funny. The you drink and laugh. Jimmy Anicet told me you'll get a free drink with admission -- talk to Jimmy if it doesn't happen. Still, this is not a bad predicament!

SAT 6/25

9pm
The Rudds, Robin Lane & The Chartbusters, OldJack, Ray Mason Band
at Rosebud Bar & Grill (behind Diner), 381 Summer St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
$10 / 21+

Earlier, I was thinking about how often I see Damon the fiddler around Union Square. I see Roy at a bunch of shows too.

When I first moved to town and was interested in working my way into the rock scene, I though someone said this guy was the publisher of The Noise. So I go up to him and say something to that effect.

He gives me a disgusted response that has made me keep my distance for all these years. This guy is a devoted music-lover, and I can understand why 4 great bands would want to play for his birthday.

Who knows the lineup of The Rudds these days? Frontman John Powhida will always be there, and they'll play the killer tunes that I thought was the best in town when they were a full-time band. And Andrea Gillis' flat-out killer singing provides and a nice contrast to Powhida's big ego and fantastic vocals.

In a perfect world, Robin Lane would be considered a gigantic global rock star. Take a look at this if you want learn a bit of Robin's story. And Ray Mason is a bit of a legend as well.

I've always liked OldJack from the first time I saw them, and I keep on liking them as they progress and make more fans all the time.

SAT 6/25

10pm
World Naked Bike Ride: Boston
meet at Parkman Bandstand, Boston Common, Boston (Tremont St Side)
FREE

I don't know if this is a put-on. I doubt someone would respond before tonight if you emailed. I have a hunch this is your best chance to bike around Boston au naturel with company.

As they say:

The World Naked Bike Ride dress code is "As Bare As You Dare"... How bare is that? How dare is that? It's all up to you. You decide what you are comfortable with.

No one is excluded or discriminated against based on levels of clothing, bodypaint, or anything else for that matter!
So this is not supposed to be a sexy thing -- think about a liberating pro-love, anti-pollution message.

People are encouraged to decorate their ride and/or body with a political message.

FYI: Roller-bladers, roller-skaters, and skate-boarders are welcome to join.

SAT 6/25: Early Half

This should've been up last night...

I guess some outdoor stuff is on, and some is rescheduled.

--------------------------------------------------------------

SAT 6/25

10am to 5pm
Let's Talk About Food Festival
at Cambridge Parkway, along Charles River, adjacent to Royal Sonesta Hotel, Cambridge (Lechmere)
FREE

Okay, looks like this is on -- rain or shine.

Some people like to talk about food. The way it tastes, the ingredients, how it was made...

The talk at this get-together includes substantial topics like how food is produced and distributed as well as the science of food. (The Museum of Science was deeply involved.)

A lot of great chefs will be doing demonstrations on the main stage like: Charles Draghi (Erbaluce), Jody Adams (Rialto), Keith Pooler (Bergamot), Frank McClelland (L’Espalier), Mary Dumont (Harvest) and Tiffani Faison (Top Chef, Season 1), Jay Murray (Grill 23), Dante de Magistris (Dante), Joanne Chang (Flour / Myers+Chang), Erwin Ramos (Ole / Zocalo).

Eating food is rather wonderful too. There will be food trucks and probably some samples.

SAT 6/25 (and SUN 6/26)

SAT 6/25

The Parlotones (7:30pm), The Daylights (6:30pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10

These are 2 contenders for bands that stride indie and arena rock and are striving to reach a higher level of pop-dom.

When I first read about The Parlotones, they were described as "South Africa's answer to..." Radiohead or Coldplay. It's not bad stuff, but I have really thought about them in the last 3 months since they've been in Boston. I think I like The Daylights better.

You can go if you enjoy the music, because no one really knows them to judge you...

SAT 6/25

6pm
Dunn
at Bull McCabe's, 366 Somerville Ave, Somerville (Union Sq)
FREE

If you feel like having a few early pints, you could do a lot worse worse than the Irish/folky rock to keep you company and enhance the experience.

Funny: I've had quite a few daytime & nighttime pints in this room, and I think Damon the fiddle-player has been there about every other time. Keep an eye out for him, and you'll see him more often...

FRI 6/24 & SAT 6/25: Interim Cheapness

Until the Friday post is up, take a look at the calendar with some relevant links under each event.

There's art, comedy, music -- it's a decent variety if you want to do something more than hanging out at a bar all night...

If you like BBQ and are near Government Center, think about having lunch where there will be a bunch pitmasters from near and far -- and you don't have to pay admission from noon to 4pm today.

Tomorrow:

There are food/health/science festivals along the Charles and at the Hynes.

Enjoy a jazz & blues festival not far from Davis Square.

Non-bloggers are welcome to attend the Sports Blogapalooza near the Garden.

Thursday, June 23, 2011

MON 6/27: Trivia Night -- Wanna Play with Me?

Friday and Saturday cheapness on the calendar.

Update: I have a red, white, and blue lei with me, and I'll wear it over my business casual. For those who haven't met me, I'll try to work my way through the crowd then might settle on the raised section at the far end of the room.

--------------------------------------------------------------

8pm to 10pm
The Big Quiz Thing
at Club Oberon, 2 Arrow St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

Do you know a free trivia night where there's a $200 1st-place prize?

I went to Big Quiz Thing by myself a couple months ago, and it's a really entertaining quiz night.

There are audio and video questions. Even a wrong answer has a chance for points if it's funny enough. Since I wasn't seriously playing, I laughed quite a bit.

I threw the offer out last month, and I'm giving a couple days for people to think about it: Let's make a CTB team!

We probably won't win, because there are some really good trivia teams that show up every month. Still I think we can finish high enough to go home with a prize of some books or DVD's.

I do rather well at most trivia nights, and I was in the top half of the rankings after 3 rounds (then I left early).

I'll be there. If you want to be on my team, leave a comment or email me.

There is a bar...

We could stage an upset...

I will pledge to stay calm if we suck!

FRI 6/24 to SUN 6/26: Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party

FYI: Friday and Saturday cheapness is on the calendar. Am feeling good about my bloggin' prospects tonight...

--------------------------------------------------------------

Noon to 10pm
Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party
at City Hall Plaza, Boston (Govt Center)
$5 online / $10 gate

FRI 6/24:
Noon to 4pm
FREE Admission

Like some others, I have mixed feelings about the Phantom Gourmet enterprise (see one of my previous BBQ Beach Party posts).

I know it costs money to organize these events, but it doesn't make me happy to pay money to buy food.

Yeah, yeah. There's sand and music and a beer garden and assorted fun -- BFD!

(And I don't mean the 'Boston Fire Department'.)

IF YOU GO, you should head over on Friday afternoon so you can eat and drink for whatever the vendors are charging.

THUR 6/23: Music & Roller Skating

Wow! They got Whitey Bulger. I thought they wouldn't capture him alive. After the death of Bin Laden, the next guy on the most-wanted list should dig a hole and jump in...

--------------------------------------------------------------

THUR 6/23

6pm
Liam Finn: Performance & Signing
at Newbury Comics, North Market Bldg, 4 Faneuil Hall Market Pl, Boston (Faneuil Hall)
FREE

It must take balls to be Neil Finn's son and get into the hook-strong songwriting game. One hand, he learns first-hand from the leader of the mighty Crowded House. On the other hand, he'll always be compared to Neil Finn!

That said, he's not bad... I'd probably drop in if I was nearby. (Not better than Dad though.)

THUR 6/23

7pm
Boy Without God, Sleepy Very Sleepy, Tamsin Wilson
at YMCA Theater, 820 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10

I went on a 'musical field trip' led by Boy Without God in 2009, and it was a great time. When he sings, there's strong fervor even when the songs are quiet.

They feel like serious songs. The whole show might be strewn with that kind of music. From what I heard of Sleepy Very Sleepy, you won't have trouble staying awake yet the mood is somewhere between dreamy and druggy. And there is an intensity behind Tamsin Wilson's soft voice

THUR 6/23

9pm to Midnight
"Down & Derby": Roller Party
at North Star, 22 Friend St, Boston (near North Station)
$5-ish w/ RSVP

Feat: DJs 7L & Knife, Saucy Lady

I'm slightly less excited to let you know about this party after I've learned that there might be a $5 cover -- as well as requiring a RSVP. (I'm guessing a 60-40 chance of being a cover.)

Still -- how often do you get to roller-skate while hanging out at a bar.

It may still be possible to RSVP. A bunch of sites besides me have mention it, so the line may be long...

THUR 6/23

9:30pm
Hanni El Khatib, Bass Drum of Death, Kal Marks
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$9 / 18+

My first instinct was that Hanni El Khatib and Bass Drum of Death would be some kind of cold, worldly electronic music. I may not be good at guessing the music from looking at band name.

These groups are both bluesy garage-rock that smashe through the air with a loose, rip-roaring swagger. Local guys Kal Marks are a bit more delberate and arty who take time for the songs to open up.

THUR 6/23

10:30pm
Mondo Thursdays: Superhoney
at Plough & Stars, 912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$5 / 21+

Funk-rock machine Superhoney may not play out as often as they did a few years ago when they would pack Harpers Ferry. I'd wager they still shake the walls and people's booties when the Superhoney starts flowing. There may not be a lot of dance room, but it should hopping -- if you can get in.

WED 6/22: Museum, TV, Music

Does your job suck? Maybe you'd like to hear about joining the Peace Corps? There's an info session at the government building next to the Garden from 6pm to 7pm. You have to RSVP by email -- or call 617-565-5555 -- to get in.

Another RSVP requested event is the "Ethnic Market Tour" in Union Square from 6pm to 7:30pm. Each session (also on 7/9, 8/4, 9/8) visits three markets in the neighborhood where you can food stuff that Shaw's doesn't have in the international section. Tonight's itinerary includes Brazil, Asia, and 'a surprise'.

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 6/22

5pm to 8pm
Summer Nights at the Museum: "Kraken: The Curious, Exciting, and Slightly Disturbing Science of Squid"
at Harvard Museum of Natural History, 26 Oxford St, Cambridge (Harvard campus)
$4.50

7pm -- Wendy Williams, "Kraken: The Curious, Exciting, and Slightly Disturbing Science of Squid": Author Talk

If you haven't been to the HMNH, it warrants a visit just to see the glass flowers. And there's a lot of other cool stuff like a coelacanth and the skeleton of a giant sloth.

Every now and then, there is free admission; but half-off ain't bad. Two other summer evening sessions will be on WED 7/27 and WED 8/24.

Tonight at 7pm, science writer Wendy Williams will read from her new book, "Kraken", which must stir visions of "Clash of the Titans" for some.

WED 6/22

8pm
Sneak Preview: "Young, Broke & Beautiful" & "Rhett & Link"
at Olde Magoun's Saloon, 518 Medford St, Somerville (Winter Hill)
FREE

Just in case others live near my corner of the world, I list this night of communal TV-watching. (It's a Yelp-hosted event, so it should be well-attended.)

It seems like "Young, Broke & Beautiful" might be the more enjoyable program. Maybe "Rhett & Link: Commercial Kings" will surprise me by actually being funny...

Broke-Ass Stuart, host of YB&B, should be there... Expect some free apps and giveaways.

There's an online sweepstakes if you're interested in winning a copy of Stuart's book.

WED 6/22

Ivan & Alyosha (11:15pm), Mighty Tiny (10pm), Somerville Symphony Orkestar (9pm), The Klezwoods (8pm)
at Church, 69 Kilmarnock St, Boston (Fenway)
$8 / 18+

Hey, MySecretBoston, nice job on Night #4 of your June residency.

Besides booking some of our local rollicking left-of-center bands, there's the Seattle indie-folkers Ivan & Alyosha who are NPR faves. This should be quite a visual and sonic spectacle.

If you've enjoy the gypsy-punk sound of the Somerville Symphony Orkestar, you can get their debut CD for an extra $5 if you buy your ticket in advance.

THUR 6/23: RSVP for Roller Party

A brief Wednesday post is coming, and cheapness through Friday is on the calendar.

--------------------------------------------------------------

9pm to Midnight
"Down & Derby": Roller Party
at North Star, 22 Friend St, Boston (near North Station)
FREE $5-ish w/ RSVP

Feat: DJs 7L & Knife, Saucy Lady

Update: It looks like there may be a $5 cover (not 100% confirmed).

That's right. Someone finally had the guts to fianlly bring roller-skating into a bar!

Why do it? Why not?

They do have a smooth-ish concrete floor, and I think there may be a sturdy rail around bar...

You don't have to skate (rentals will be available), however most people are going to gain a few inches of height advantage on you.

On the other hand, it could be rather hilarious to see people struggling if they haven't skated in years.

Although I normally wouldn't "club" here, this seems like a fun time. FYI: It's a pretty good meal option that's neither fancy nor a slice of pizza.

You might even end in Saucy Lady's music video, who is a DJ and singer-songwriter. (I just pictured a woman with an acoustic turntable hanging from a strap.)

TUES 6/21: Class, Music, Circus

Happy Summer Solstice!

Could today actually be the longest day of the year? Despite the early climax, the days will seem very long for the next couple months...

--------------------------------------------------------------

TUES 6/21

7pm to 8:30pm
"Building a Buzz: Using Social Media as a Marketing Tool"
at Brookline High School, 115 Greenough St, Brookline (Brookline Hills)
$6

If you've got a commercial activity, you may want to spend a few bucks for tips to leverage the various social websites out there.

Or you could do some research via Google (or whatever), but time is money...

TUES 6/21

7:30pm
"Major Ladies of Boston": CD Release Party
at Church, 69 Kilmarnock St, Boston (Fenway)
$10 / 18+

Feat: Nancia, Bay Holla, Ms Aquarius, Gee, Animocity, Shea Rose, Dutch ReBelle, Boo Gorjus, Su-kin, Ms Sheek, Shellee Shae, Ms. Gucci, Niki Fontaine, Iyadonna, Lady Repo, Carmen, Letia Larok, Nyrie, K'Loni Sky, Lisette Love, Sarita, 40 B.A.R.R.S, Pretty Poison, Kaira, Ms Purp, Kiki Breevlife

With about 25 different female MC's hitting the stage in one night, there is no doubt the major ladies of Boston are on stage. There's not many left out.

The core of the MLB consists of Bay Holla, Ms Aquarius, Gee, Animocity, and Ms Sheek who first got together a few years ago. Tonight they celebrate a CD release with many of their sisters-in-arms. I listened to snippets of many listed above, and don't underestimate this crew.

From previous listens, Shea Rose and Letia Larok are definite standouts. In fact I think of Shea Rose as a guitar-slinging soul-rock monster, so there will be some variety.

TUES 6/21

9pm
Solstice Circus Anniversary Show
at Plough & Stars, 912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10ish / 21+

Yeah, these folks have performed acrobatic feats in that tiny corner of the Plough on previous season changes. They actually started last summer solstice.

There is usually some music acts as well, but I didn't find a lineup.

TUES 6/21

9pm
You Can Be A Wesley, Mean Creek, earthquake party!, Felix and Volcano
at O'Brien's, 3 Harvard St, Allston
$8 / 18+

I had to double-check that this show was really at O'Briens. There's a lot of excellent indie-rock in one club tonight.

Since it happened last week, let's bring up that Mean Creek cleaned up at the Phoenix Music Poll by winning "Best Act", "Best Male Vocal", and "Song Of The Year".

You'd think that would be enough, but You Can Be A Wesley and earthquake party also add some fuzzy/noisy goodness to the experience. Just heard Felix and Volcano, and am digging it.

TUES 6/21

10pm to 1am
Le Prestige
at Atwoods Tavern, 877 Cambridge St, Cambridge (near Inman & Kendall Sq)
FREE

I was wondering why this wasn't part of Somerville's Jazz & Blues Fest, and then I realized Atwoods is in Cambridge. This is the kind of loungey, bopping modern jazz for hanging out and drinking from the extensive draft beer selection.

MON 6/20: Readings, Film, Jazz, Dance

Well, it was a beautiful weekend. And it's a beautiful day.

If you skipped work, you might as well go out tonight and stay up late. Then you won't have to fake looking like crap...

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 6/20

5:30pm to 8:30pm
"Printer's Devil Review": Launch Party
at Middlesex Lounge, 315 Mass Ave, Cambridge (near Central Sq)

Free PDR shirts, buttons, etc will be available...

MON 6/20

6pm
Civil War Movies: "Young Mr. Lincoln"
at Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

Before he was president or a vampire-hunter, Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer -- who defended an innocent man against murder charges in this film directed by John Ford.

MON 6/20

7pm
Alina Simone, "You Must Go and Win": Reading & Performance
at Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard St, Brookline (Coolidge Corner)
FREE

Singer-songwriter Alina Simone will read from her collection of wry essays and perform some songs.

MON 6/20

7:30pm
Torch Night
at Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville (Spring Hill)
$7

Feat: Gabrielle Agachiko, Catharine David, Richard White, Marva Wooden, Gordon Michaels, Gail Leondar-Wright, Debora Lane, Marilyn Dale

Since Somerville is holding its 2nd annual Jazz & Blues Fest, a nigh of torch songs is also returning. A variety of vocalists will perform the music of Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, and other smoldering standards of that ilk with a guitar trio backing them up.

There is something jazzy and/or bluesy in Somerville this week culminating in an outdoor concert on SAT 6/25 at the park near Powderhouse Sq.

MON 6/20

9pm
"Don't Ask Don't Tell"
at O'Brien's, 3 Harvard St, Allston
$5 / 18+

Feat: The Fagettes, DJ Drasher, DJ Driver, DJ Trueno

With a name like "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and an indie-rock band called The Fagettes on the bill, you have to believe this is a gay-friendly dance night with a sense of humor. There's a YouTube video from a couple months ago.

SUN 6/19: Sunday Night Off-Topic Video

This video was posted about 2 weeks ago, and it's reached a million views.

It's kinda hilarious to watch this North Shore kid perform Madonna's "Vogue" about 20 years ago at some tourist spot in Hampton Beach.

I don't know much about this guy, but it makes me think that our sexual orientation is not a choice.

Performing to Madonna in Summer '91, Age Nine from Robert Jeffrey on Vimeo.

SUN 6/19: Crafts, Yoga, Bacon, Performances

I saw the Stanley Cup, and it was pretty cool. Let's hope it rolls through town again.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there -- whether you know it or not...

--------------------------------------------------------------

SUN 6/19

Noon until 6pm
Boston Bazaar Bizarre: Union Made Fair
at Union Sq Plaza, Somerville (nexus of Somerville Ave, Washington St, Bow St)
FREE

If you still have to buy Dad a gift, maybe you can find something out of the ordinary for him. I usually find stuff for myself at these things.

There will supposedly be demonstrations too, so maybe you can make your own gift in the future.

SUN 6/19

2pm to 4pm
Sunday Fun in the Park
at Field by Arthur Fiedler Statue, Storrow Dr, Boston (Charles River Esplanade)
FREE

2pm to 4pm -- parkland games
2:30pm -- "Gentle Yoga"
3:30pm -- Community Boating Orientation
3:30pm -- "Family Yoga"
Yeah, "Family-friendly" activities aren't usually my thing, but it seems like a good day to be by the river. It wouldn't hurt to get a little yoga in.

They say, "Bring your own mat if you can."

There will be simlar activities on 7/24, 8/21, and 9/11.

SUN 6/19

3pm
Boston Bacon Takedown
at Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville (Spring Hill)
$15

It's more than $10, but there will b about 20 bacon dishes to try. Each will want to be the best, so there should be some outlandish treats.

Go early, because one never knows when the pork runs out. It will be crowded, and it will smell awesome.

SUN 6/19

3pm
"Salacious Salon" #2: Release Party
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$6 / 18+
3pm to 6pm -- party
5pm -- performance
Readings and performances by: Cherie Van Ella, Lord Byron, Ashley Young, more

You don't have to be a queer feminist to enjoy this magazine release party, but it could help. Truth Serum is hosting the party, and they know how to have a good time. Proceeds will benefit The Femme Show's summer road show.

SUN 6/19

7:30pm
"Daddy's Badass Variety Show"
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$8 Advance / $10 Day Of Show / 18+

Feat: Asa Brebner & the Fuc#in' Toads, Bonfire Bandit, Dolly Vixenz Burlesque, Brian Gordon, DJ's El Poser & Lotusound

When there's a mix of music, art, burlesque, comedy, etc; there's bound to be something for everyone. On the other hand, it may not be everything for everyone.

Still lots of good stuff for an early start time. Asa Brebner has been making great music since he played with Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers; I get the feeling the new band name (Fuc#in' Toads) may mean a new direction. (Or not.) Bonfire Bandit has an interesting sound going on too.

A bunch of art will be on view as well, and body-art airbrushing on hand. I'm not sure how there will be room for an audince, but there will be.

SUN 6/19

9pm
Dave Aaronoff & The Protagonists
at Toad, 1912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Porter Sq)
FREE

Dave Aaronoff has also played in killers bands such as The Shods, The Pills, and a little band called The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. In his latest project, he's got a band that includes pedal steel guitar and fiddle.

SAT 6/18: Parade, Music, Sailing, Dance

Okay, gotta wrap this up and go to the Bruins parade!

--------------------------------------------------------------

SAT 6/18

11am to 1pm
Boston Bruins: Championship Parade
from TD Garden to Copley Square, Boston
FREE

The team rides along in duck boats while we cheer.

I'd love to think we'll see the Stanley Cup again soon, but this is its first Boston appearance in decades.

My personal "top 3 viewing locations": City Hall Plaza, Copley Square, and the corner of Boylston & Arlington.

SAT 6/18

2pm
Make Music Festival, Volume 4
around Harvard Sq, Cambridge
FREE

Based on "Fete de la Musique" that started in Paris, it's just a loose, outdoor celebration of music in all sorts of genres.

There's a PDF schedule/map for the 16 locations, but suffice to say that Harvard Square will be awash in music for more than 6 hours.

The only performers I'd especially seek out is OldJack at 5pm.

SAT 6/18

1pm to 5pm
Sailing Open House
at Boston Sailing Center, Lewis Wharf, Boston (North End)
FREE

Enjoy a free sail in the harbor. If you want to sign you up for lessons, you can -- or you could just check it out and enjoy the ride and free refreshments. Again, this on Lewis Wharf by the Marriot; look for the riverboat.

As they say, "No sailing experience necessary. All ages welcome. Sailors of all abilities are welcome."

There may be other open houses this summer, but I think the parade will keep the crowds light.

Keep in mind it will be a bit cooler on the water…

SAT 6/18

7pm to 10pm
BalletRox: "Springs Out of the Box"
at Strand Theatre, 543 Columbia Rd, Dorchester (Uphams Corner)
$10 side / $20 center

Feat: The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library w/ Sarah Rabdau

I watched a video of of the Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library rehearsing with the dancers, and it was rather good. The chamber-folk vibe seemed to extract the pretentiousness from the ballet, and I felt a greater appreciation.

It's not the MJEML (which includes a BalletRox choreographer) with Sarah Rabdau on vocals. Other pieces have been created by Boston Ballet alumni who work with Ballet Rox.

[Facebook]

SAT 6/18

7pm
The Pointer Sisters
at Hatch Shell, Storrow Dr, Boston (Charles River Esplanade)
FREE

I'm so excited, I just can't hide it.

Actually, I'm not that excited. Still the ladies had a bunch of fun songs, and two-thirds of the original sisters -- along with a relative -- isn't bad for basically a nostalgia act.

There is usually an opener of some kind at these oldies concerts too.

SAT 6/18

8pm to 10pm
For the Sake of the Song: A Tribute to Joni Mitchell
at Arts at The Armory Cafe, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville (Spring Hill)
$8

Feat: Patrick Coman, Kristen Ford, Audrey Ryan, Jennifer Greer, Abbie Barrett

When singer-songwriters are doing half tribute songs and half originals, one may worry about the non-Joni material. I've seen most these folks play their own gigs, and you don't need to worry -- this is good stuff.

If Kristen Ford and Audrey Ryan don't blow you away, at least one of them will.

SAT 6/18

8:30pm to 10pm
"Parade of Lights"
around Boston Harbor
FREE

About 30 decorated boats are going down the waterfront from Charlestown towards the east end of the Seaport.

Not really thrilling, but it might be like a row of nautical Xmas trees.

This year the parade gets closer to the Boston side of the harbor; I assume it would be a pleasant sight from Eastie.

SAT 6/18

8:30pm
Hudson Falcons, Jason Bennett & The Resistance, Chosen Ones, The McGunks, Bad Lieutenants
at Midway Cafe, 3496 Washington St, Jamaica Plain
$10

If you're looking for top-notch Boston street-punk, look no further than Jason Bennett & The Resistance. The music is strong, and the lyrics are passionate. It's a good, solid lineup of punk bands from here to RI & NY.

SAT 6/18

9:30pm
McAlister Drive, Kingsley Flood, Son Of The Sun, Jamie Kent
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$10 / 21+

I've long been a fan of Kingsley Flood. Even though I've placed Americana labels and they were named "Best Roots Act" in Boston this week, KF is just a kickass rock band with clever songs. Maybe it's because there's a fiddle player and the singer plays an acoustic guitar with a porkpie hat. Just sit back and enjoy wild ride.

Buffalo's Son of the Sun makes big, melodic rock that has recently been prospering in the UK (rhymes with Shmoldplay or Shmow Patrol). Since they're from Buffalo, it's got more balls. McAlister Drive rocks, and I liked what I heard of Jamie Kent.

SAT 6/18

10:30pm
Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers
at Plough & Stars, 912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$5 / 21+

On a recent gig post for Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers, I mentioned

They won the Boston Blues Challenge last year and, from all accounts, represented Boston admirably at the international competition in Memphis.

By channeling the sound of Delta guys who got electric in that transitional period in the '40s and '50s on their way north (and the goden era of blues), Harpe and the Swingers make an organic, modern sound that rocks free of the sometimes bloated blues interpretations.

It's good stuff that you really don't need to think about too much.

SAT 6/18: The Bruins Parade

For the record, there is more free/cheap options for tomorrow including the Banditos Misteriosos water gun battle (listed below).

If you're not a hockey fan, tomorrow morning is a good place to go anywhere except along the route above.

--------------------------------------------------------------

11am to 1pm
Boston Bruins: Championship Parade
from TD Garden to Copley Square, Boston
FREE

I think we all know the drill from the Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics...

The team rides along in duck boats while we cheer.

In fairness, this will be the first of these rolling celebrations that we can see the Stanley Cup.

Will it be passed to each of the vehicles? Or will Chara and Thomas slosh light beer on each other as they pass it back and forth?

In consideration of viewing possibilities and relative ease of movement through a crowd, I think the best viewing places are: City Hall Plaza, Copley Square, and the corner of Boylston & Arlington.

FRI 6/17: Film & Music

Okay, I may have a strange affection for simple, straightforward, delicious Greek food (and they feel like my family except with less pasta). There's a Greek festival this weekend near Central Square. Caution: The lines get long at the usual meal times.

--------------------------------------------------------------

FRI 6/17

Dusk
Movies by Moonlight: "Laura"
at Boston Harbor Hotel, 70 Rowes Wharf, Boston (Waterfront)
FREE

Sundown
Free Friday Flicks: "Daddy Day Care"
at Hatch Shell, Storrow Dr, Boston (Charles River Esplanade)
FREE

What can I say about these films? I wouldn't go out of my way for either one, especially "Daddy Day Care".

This happens to be the first night for both locations that will screen open-air movies every Friday through the summer -- through 8/26 at the Hatch Shell and 9/2 at the Boston Harbor Hotel.

As one might expect at a high-end hotel, BHH is showing more adult and classic fare. Upcoming films include "Field of Dreams", "Double Indemnity", "Back to the Future", and "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

There will be a lot of animated films at the Hatch Shell like "Megamind", "How To Train Your Dragon", "Toy Story 3", and finishing up with "Iron Man 2". It seems geared for a night with kids of all ages that could include a blanket, picnic, etc.

Regarding the times, Boston Harbor Hotel can start a little earlier thanks to geography and architecture. You're looking at start times between 8pm and 8:25pm.

There is space to sit and see the screen at the BHH even if you're not dining/drinking, and it's kinda cool to sit on the waterfront. I prefer the Hatch Shell's wide open space, although you could end up far back if you don't get there early.

(Umm, like every event that happens at the Hatch Shell...)

FRI 6/17

9pm
Paul Collins Beat, Muck & The Mires, Watts, The Dirty Shames
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / 18+

For lovers of power-pop, garage-rock and the area between the two; it doesn't get much better than this gig.

There's the Paul Collins Beat who were part of the LA scene in '70s/'80s. (If that means anything to you, Paul Collins was originally in a band with Peter Case of The Plimsouls.)

It's not much of an exaggeration to say Muck & The Mires are the best garage-rock band in the country. Little Steven had a national competition a few years back, and they won. They truly kick ass in what sounds like a Merseybeat band that love The Ramones.

Yes, Watts and The Dirty Shames also rock.

FRI 6/17

9pm
St Helena, The Future Everybody, Muy Cansado, Parlour Bells
at Rosebud Bar & Grill (behind Diner), 381 Summer St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
$10

I especially dig St. Helena and Muy Cansado (who are in the middle of playing every Friday in June at the Rosebud) -- however there is going to be a complementary variety of catchy, rockish song-oriented music from top to bottom.

If you haven't been to the bar behind the dining car, get yourself hip to one of the hidden bars in Davis Square that is less of a secret everyday.

FRI 6/17

9:30pm
Mascara, A Bit Much, The New Highway Hymnal, Lion Cub
at Milky Way Lounge/Bella Luna, 284 Amory St, Jamaica Plain (The Brewery Complex)
$7 / 21+

Well, you're not going to be disappointed by Chris Mascara and his power trio as they rip through clever, twisted glammy-garagey material. These guys know how to play and put on a show.

They might be the closers with a set of bands that go in various directions like progressive rock, semi-psychedelic, and indie-pop.
