WED 8/6: Xmas, Queerness, Opera, "Splash"-Rock, Boston's Everly Bros

The Motion Sick, August Wednesday Residency
Andy Warhol would've been 80 today, and it's the 24th anniversary of Prince's "Purple Rain". So just think about this for a minute:

"Fantasy love is much better than reality love. Never doing it is very exciting. The most exciting attractions are between two opposites that never meet."

-- Andy Warhol

Touch if U will my stomach,
Feel how it trembles inside.
You've got the butterflies all tied up.
Dont make me chase U,
Even doves have pride.
-- Prince, "When Doves Cry"

WED 8/6

5:30pm
"Christmas in August"
at Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

Most of the time I encourage some time at the Boston Public Library, but would anyone go out on a rainy night to watch Xmas movies? I don't know. If it was a hot, gotta-get-free-A/C night; then it would be no question 'cause the feature is the awesome, probably under-rated "Nightmare Before Christmas". There are some wacky shorts on tonight's program, which leads me to suggest to imbibe, ingest, or inhale before going tonight.

Also on tonight's program: "Toys" (a Canadian short from '66), "Merry Christmas Space Case", "Madeline's Christmas", and "Winter Holiday Stories" (covers Hanukkah, Christmas, & Kwanzaa)

WED 8/6

7pm to 9pm
"Queer Women of Color": Spoken Word & Performance
at Middlesex Lounge, 315 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$5 / All Ages

Feat: Good Asian Drivers, Ignacio Rivera, Judah Dorrington, Kay Barrett, Letta Neely, & Shante Paradigm

There's a whole week of programming by Boston's Queer Women of Color group. As always, I'm sure everyone with good intentions are welcome, but hetero white guys might feel a little out of place get props for their openmindedness...

Soul Touch will get the beautiful rainbow dancing with a groovy mix of R&B, soul, and house afterwards until 1am.

From the Weekly List:

WED 8/6

The Interiors (Midnight), MEandJOANCOLLINS (11pm), The Motion Sick (10pm), The Lights Out (9pm)
at Church, 69 Kilmarnock St, Boston
FREE / 21+

The Motion Sick put some very cool music together by slightly tweaking the straightforward songs with all sorts of musical tricks, but they don't stray too far from power-pop goodness a la Fountains of Wayne et al. Honestly, they didn't really give good show the last time I saw them. It was their 100th show, and who knows what was happening. I'm sure they wanted to raise the roof, but maybe they had some backstage drama. Something was off, but I'd like to think this fun-loving residency will get them back on track.

Tonight is "Splash" Wednesday followed by "Arthur Ashe" Wednesday, "The Flash" Wednesday, and "'Stache Wednesday". Four free shows, and the first one is stacked. At this point, I think I like The Lights Out better than Motion Sick. MEandJOANCOLLINS challenges me and dares me to like them (and I guess I do). Anything that even vaguely reminds me of glam Bowie has got me. The Interiors are from Chicago and probably kick ass in concert.

If you don't go this week, I'd recommend 8/27 when The Motion Sick are joined by Mieka Pauley and Brendan Boogie Band. But this is a really good lineup.

WED 8/6

7pm - Doors Open
The Rowan Brothers
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$10 / 21+

Our version of the Everly Brothers, the Rowans moved to San Francisco in the 70's. Opened for the Grateful Dead... Released a few albums... They still make beautiful music together. There's not much more to say. I bet this will be amazing -- and packed to the gills (according to fire marshall regulations, of course).

WED 8/6

7pm
"Opera Highlights"
at Hatch Shell, Charles River Esplanade, Storrow Dr, Boston
Church of the Covenant, 67 Newbury St, Boston (Back Bay)
FREE

Update: I'm glad people actually read this and respond! It's been brought to my attention that these concerts are never rained out. (I thought it would be.)

Boston Landmarks Orchestra gets together with Boston Lyric Opera; performing famous excerpts from Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann", Dvorak's "Rusalka", Mozart's "Don Giovanni".

You're going to hear 4-5 selections from each opera including the famous arias like Barcarolle from "Tales of Hoffman" (it's been a few movies) and almost anything from "Don Giovanni".

Latest Update: It'll be an indoor concert tonight.
