FRI 5/15: Acoustic, Drunk Lit, Burlesque, Funk, Rock, Film

There have been some technical difficulties at CTB & Co, but this is dedicated to the old saying, "Something is better than nothing." Wish me luck...

(Go ahead and click to see the full-size animated flyer.)

--------------------------------------------------------------

FRI 5/15

7pm
The Woodrow Wilsons, Christians & Lions, Gracious Calamity, Uncle Shoe, Jelen
at Church of the Advent (Library), 30 Brimmer St, Boston (Beacon Hill)
FREE / All Ages

This should be an amazing night of acoustic music in a special setting that probably has some beautiful acoustics. The catch is, as you might guess, there is no drinking allowed. There are bars for after (or before)...

FRI 5/15

7pm to 10pm
Vernacular Spring Gala
at Grub Street HQ, 160 Boylston, 4th floor, Boston (Boston Common)
$3 advance / $5 door

Would you like to hang out with writers (from Emerson and elsewhere), which will include all-you-can-drink Narragansett, food, and funky party band Gentleman Hall?

FRI 5/15

8pm to 11pm
Boston Babydoll Benefit
at YMCA Theater, 820 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 suggested donation

Some people don't get there's a difference between burlesque and strip clubs. (Some people may even be disappointed when they figure out the difference...) The Boston Babydolls want to open a rehearsal space/dance studio in Quincy, and one of the city councilors is freaking out -- probably because he thinks it's a good political fight. (More info here and here.)

Well, nobody puts Babydolls in a corner. They're fighting, and this is a fundraiser to keep up the fight. A bunch of performers will appear, and there will be door prizes, raffles, etc.

Feel free to give, if you dislike close-minded people.

FRI 5/15

9pm
Zili Musik, Shea Rose, Iyeoka & the Rock By Funk Tribe
at Church, 69 Kilmarnock St, Boston (Fenway)
$10 / 21+

It might be Zili Musik's CD release party tonight, but I enjoy the funkiness of Shea Rose and Iyeoka more than their world-music vibe. It's good and fun; I'm just saying they're the #3 group on the bill for me. Lots of female power tonight! Listen and enjoy what you like.

FRI 5/15

The Konks (11pm), The Maintainers (10pm), Ian Adams (9pm)
at Cantab Underground / Club Bohemia, 738 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$8

It's going to be a garage-rock party reminiscent of a departed Somerville club that rhymes with "Shabby Lounge". The Konks always pound out the primal rock, and Ian Adams (ex-Rock City Crimewave) is still making cool music, but it's not as loud...

FRI 5/15 & SAT 5/16

Midnight
"Inglorious Bastards (Original)"
at Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline
$7.75

Maybe no one would want to pretend to be Quentin Tarantino, but he saw this wild, mid-70's B-movie with non-stop action/violence at some point. Minutes later, Tarantino probably decided to remake it with Brad Pitt as the star. I doubt it'll be more fun than the original.
