SAT 9/12: Much Cheap Fun

I tried a new startegy, and it didn't quite work... The calendar is updated through Tuesday...

There's also some holdovers below that started on Friday.

There's a train to catch, so links won't open in a new window as usual.

--------------------------------------------------------------

SAT 9/12

9am to 1pm
Mayor's Food + Fuel Summit
at Reggie Lewis Center, 1350 Tremont St, Boston (near Roxbury Crossing T)
FREE

Learn about fuel and food assistance programs. Attend workshops on home weatherization, financial planning, healthy food purchasing and preparation, and much more.

Free Weatherization Kit including a Compact Fluorescent Light bulb or other valuable coupons for the first 200 participants. Seasonal Flu shots available (while supplies last).

Part of embracing the cheap life is finding cheap fun. Another part is saving money where one can...

SAT 9/12

Noon to 6pm
Jamaica Plain World's Fair
at Hyde Square, Centre St & Perkins St, Jamaica Plain
FREE

Update: Cancelled...

JP has it's own cool vibe with quite a global/multicultural community everyday. I think the annual World's Fair didn't happen last year, so I'd like to think there may be a bit more joy in the air for it's return.

Neighbors and strangers mingle with about a dozen acts (mostly latin and world) on two stages, various artsy-crafts-etc vendors, and delicious fare from around the world. Plenty of fun for kids obviously. This page gives a good idea of the layout and the stage schedules.

On any given day, it's nice to walk down Centre Street and check out the diverse businesses (and maybe take a detour to Jamaica Pond or Sam Adams)...

SAT 9/12

7pm
The Boston Underground Summit I
at Outside the Lines Studio, 70 Colby St, Medford (near Tufts)
$10 / All Ages

Feat: Mind Yeti, Life Partners, The Needy Visions, Streight Angular, Mmoss, Big Digits, Crystal Understanding, World Map, Many Mansions, Maine Coons

In the tradition of Dan Deacon's Baltimore Round Robin that hit town last year, a healthy sampling of Boston's underground bands set up around the audience and each will play one song at a time.

Besides getting a rather twisted box of sonic chocolate (punk / pop / psych / ambient / noise / electro / hip-hop), the jams hopefully keep on coming without the awkward silences

If you're going along a set of nondescript buildings near some baseball fields, you're in the right place...

SAT 9/12

1pm to 10pm
Block Party on the Greene
at Greene Rose Heritage Park, 238 Broadway St, Cambridge (Kendall Sq)
$5 / 21+

Update: Postponed until SAT 9/19

Feat: Will Dailey & the Rivals, The Wandas, The Honors, Cocked N' Loaded, The Cretins, It's From the Sky, Lindsey Starr & the Chemical Smiles, DJs Roguewaves & Randy Deshaies

This is going to be a damn fine day of music; there's not a bad band on the bill, but I especially like Will Dailey and The Wandas. You'll probably find a new favorite band, and supposedly there will be an area for outdoor drinking...

SAT 9/12

6:30pm
"Under the Stars": International Movie Nights
Feat: "Pane e Tulipani (Bread and Tulips)"
behind the Old Fire Station, 165 Broadway, Somerville (East Somerville)
FREE

Did you miss the trip to Brazil last week? This weekend walk behind the firehouse to Italy and Argentina next week.

The fun starts at 6:30pm with Carmen Spada getting jazzy, food vendors, and maybe even a raffle. The movie starts at 8pm. I saw "Pane e Tulipani" (Italian with English subtitles) a few years ago, and it's pretty good.

Raindate: SAT 9/26

SAT 9/12

Muck & The Mires (10pm & Midnight), The Odds (11pm)
at Precinct, 70 Union Sq, Somerville (Union Sq)
$7

Muck and the Mires will play two sets of their near-perfect balance of classic garage/Mersey rock with punk vitality. They were named the best garage band in the country a few years ago, and I think they still hold the title.

The Odds were JJ Rassler's post-DMZ band that hasn't rocked Boston in long time. I couldn't find any audio samples, but JJ can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. The DMZ reunion rocked, and The Downbeat 5 always deliver big-time.

SAT 9/12

9:30pm
MeandJoanCollins, Midatlantic, The Russians, Topheavy
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$9 advance / $10 day of show / 18+

Wow, there is too many really good bands on this bill. Can you handle this much modern pop/rock excellence?
