MON 4/6: Ice Cream, Classical, Rock

If all goes well today: the Sox will win, the Tarheels will win, and I'll have the remnants of a $1 scoop of Cherry Ortiz dripping down my face.

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 4/6

Noon to 9pm
Ice Cream Cone/Cup to Celebrate Sox Home Opener
at all JP Licks locations (Jamaica Plain, Brookline, Somerville, Boston, Newton, Chestnut Hill)
$1

Update: I copy & pasted info from last year (when it was a free scoop); it's actually a measly $1.

You didn't get tickets to Opening Day, but anyone can get a scoop at JP Licks for $1. As in previous years, JP Licks celebrates the Red Sox Home Opening Day by offering a free scoop of ice cream/frozen yogurt.

The Sox will win... You feel like a winner... You might even win Sox tickets from JP Licks, if you enter you name and email address...

MON 4/6

8pm
First Monday
at Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St, Boston (New England Conservatory/Fenway)
FREE

The "First Monday" series is a great chance to hear classical chamber music from top-notch players associated with NEC in some capacity.

Tonight's Program:

Henry Purcell: Fantasias
Schumann: Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47
Stravinsky: Octet
MON 4/6

8:30pm
Pretty & Nice, Sincerely the Management, The Big Big Bucks, Kate Radio
at Middlesex Lounge, 315 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE w/ RSVP

Hosted by promotional company Illius Rock that seems to let fans support bands in a webby way. This is their second free show, and these are a few pix from the January gig. The bands are all pretty good, but the the band who I think is really good is Pretty & Nice. I just dig that punky powerpop sound, and I'm not the only one -- Sub Pop likes their stuff too. Check them out before their post-SXSW tour.

To RSVP, look for the "Are you in?" link. You'll have to create an account. (It didn't take too long; my spam hasn't increased dramatically...)

MON 4/6

9:30pm
Eksi Ekso (11:15pm), Apple Betty (10:30pm), Gravehaven (9:45pm), The Minus Scale (9pm)
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$9 / 18+

Night #2 of the Rock 'n Roll Rumble. (Congrats to The Luxury for winning last night's first preliminary. Some photos from the show.)

It should be an interesting battle tonight. Eksi Ekso and Gravehaven both have have what could be called a "progressive rock" angle. (Eksi Ekso even has string players.) Apple Betty and The Minus Scale are two awfully good punky bands. I've never seen The Minus Scale, but Apple Betty exude good times with an old-school punk-rock approach. My vote would go to Apple Betty, but I have no idea what will happen. (Maybe The Minus Scale?)
