MON 7/7: Jazz, Rock Doc/Whodunnit, Hip-Hop, "Scratch Me Mondays"

The Gits Movie poster
"Scratch Me Mondays" aren't as bad as they sound if read below. I really wanted to send out a full list of stuff for the week last night, but I didn't. Maybe tonight...

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 7/7

12:30pm-1:30pm
Rusty Scott: "The Tenors vs. The Trains"
at South Station, Boston
FREE

The Jazz in July series continues this year. This is the first of 28 free performances that mainly occur in Downtown Crossing and South Station. Some top-notch jazz for lunch isn't bad if you work downtown, and the station is air-conditioned.

The Rusty Scott Quartet is joined by tenor sax-man and Berklee professor Bill Pierce for the best kind of battles that doesn't include weapons or mixed martial arts.

MON 7/7

6pm to 7:30pm
"The Gits Movie": Boston Premeire
at Newbury Comics, 332 Newbury St, Boston (Back Bay)
FREE

If you've ever heard of The Gits, it's not because they didn't try. On the verge of recording their 2nd album in 1993, their charismatic lead singer Mia Zapata was raped and murdered on the streets of Seattle. What music we do have of The Gits is kickass rock 'n roll that can be seen in this documentary, but the unsolved murder is the dramatic pull in this film. I don't want to give anything away (that couldn't be easily Googled), but this is final cut of the movie after amazing circumstances occured during its making.

MON 7/7

9pm
Vibation
w/ DJ Bradford James, Brother J, Foundation Movement, Michael Warrior Bonds, DJ Kon
at Church, 69 Kilmarnock St, Boston (Fenway)
FREE before 10pm / $5 before Midnight / $10 after / 21+

It's a "soulful house/nu-jazz/hip-hop/neo-soul/Afrobeat" night every Monday with DJ Bradford James. For all you fans of early-90s hip-hop, Brother J Of X-Clan will perform at some point (you know after midnight). Foundation Movement and spoken-word artist Michael Warriors Bonds also appear.

MON 7/7

All Day
"Scratch Me Mondays"
at all JP Licks locations (Jamaica Plain, Brookline, Somerville, Boston, Newton, Chestnut Hill)
FREE

One doesn't need much encouragement to go to JP Licks , because the ice cream is so darn good! But if you go on Mondays in July, you get a scratch card with various prizes and discounts to local establishments. Nothing big, but every card is a winner.

One lucky winner will have a "$250 Cash Cow Card" from J.P. Licks (and a monthly floral arrangement for one year from Twig). You can enter the drawing for the grand prize online.
