WED 9/1: Film, Pop, Stargazing, Comedy

For some reason I thought this would be a good night to list some of the recurring cheap fun on Wednesdays.

I'm thinking about going to the MFA tonight to see the Richard Avedon photo exhibit, since it's the museum is free on Wednesday evenings.

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 9/1

6pm to 8pm
"A Corte do Norte/True and Tender Is the North"
at Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

The two main reasons why I like this event:

1) Altough the dialogue may bog it down for subtitle readers, it's a visually beautiful period piece from Portugal as part of the IberoAmerican Film Festival.

2) The theater is bound to be cooler than my apartment for free.
Interesting note: Since it's a multi-generational saga, one actress plays about a half-dozen characters.

WED 9/1

8pm
Marina & the Diamonds, Young The Giant
at The Paradise, 967 Comm Ave, Boston (near BU)
$10.17 / 18+

At 17 cents over our usual limit, this is definitely worth a shot. I couldn't tell if this was sold-out, but Ticketmaster wasn't working when I tried. The Paradise box office (617-562-8800) is supposed to be open from noon to 6pm. (I neglected to call...)

I was listening to this relatively slick version of indie-pop (not quite oxymoronic), and it goes down very easily with little guilt. The Welsh chick of Greek ancestry puts a lot of thought into the lyrics that sounds rather critical of the emptiness of pop culture, and she sounds great.

Young the Giant is rather sunny, catchy rock that likewise adds a few spoonfuls of sugar yet may not make you sick or leave a cavity.

This is also the first show since they've renovated the club.

WED 9/1

8pm
All Things Horror Presents:
"Dead Hooker in a Trunk" w/ "Side Effect", "Rubber Whore Hell", "Taste the Fear - Taste the Flesh"
at Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square, Somerville
$5 / 17+

It's difficult to recommend this program based solely on one of the shorts.

The feature "Dead Hooker in a Trunk" looks like a solid, good-time grindhouse-style romp with a sense of humor. "Side Effect" looks interesting and professionally produced. It's the trailer for "Rubber Whore Hell" that's so disturbing; I didn't even watch the whole thing.

Otherwise, I suggest checking out our local monthly indie-horror film festival that occurs on the first Wednesday of the month. Admission is cheap, and they sell beer. Good times!

Update: Okay. In fairness to Mike from "All Things Horror", I'm copying his comment so you're dissuaded:
I know Rubber Whore Hell looks disturbing, but it's actually pretty hilarious (it's definitely not a torture movie or uber violent) and was filmed right in Somerville. The writer and star, Nick Lazzaro, will be on hand for a quick Q&A after too.
Yikes, filmed in Somerville!

WED 9/1

8:30pm to 9:30pm
Astronomy Open Night
at Coit Observatory, Roof, 725 Comm Ave, Boston (BU campus)
FREE

It's should be a clear night (before the hurricane hits on Friday), so why not see the stars through telescopes and binoculars from the roof of a BU building? Observatory Night takes place on Wednesday nights through the end of the month, and I'm guessing that fewer returning students will show up tonight.

Again it'll probably be cooler than staying home. To get to the observatory, go to the 5th floor; the stairwell to the Observatory is located next to room 520. (There is no handicap accessibility.)

WED 9/1

10pm
The Naked Comedy Showcase
at ImprovBoston, 40 Prospect St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10

I don't if it's the best night to go and watch, but it's a good time to perform without any clothes. (Do you get the idea that thinking about the heat today?)

Yes, there will always be someone who is more under-dressed whatever you wear to the show. Comedians of both genders peel off their clothes before they ply their craft every first Wednesday of every month

Naked Comedy Showcase takes place the, but I think summertime is the best time to go, at least the best entertain you beyond the gimmick (in the case of the female comedians, "gimmicks").

Remember these are comedians -- not exotic dancers -- so go to laugh.

Hi Rob, Mike from All Things Horror here.

Thanks once again for the mention, we appreciate it!

I know Rubber Whore Hell looks disturbing, but it's actually pretty hilarious (it's definitely not a torture movie or uber violent) and was filmed right in Somerville. The writer and star, Nick Lazzaro, will be on hand for a quick Q&A after too.

Thanks again!

No problem, Mike!

I guess I couldn't hang in there 'til the funny part... Now I'm bummed that I probably won't make it tonight.
