SAT 4/9: Brains, Poems, Games, Tunes

I'm hanging out with friends, so I wanted to get something up for Saturday -- in case something happens...

--------------------------------------------------------------

SAT 4/9 (and SUN 4/10)

9am to 5pm
BarCamp Boston 6
at Microsoft N.E.R.D. Center, One Memorial Dr, 11th Fl., Cambridge (Kendall Sq)
FREE

Billed as "Boston's Free Geek unConference", a few hundred people will participate in a variety of sessions on technical and non-technical subjects. (See last year's schedule to get an idea.)

Thanks to the sponsors, "complimentary pizza (including vegan and vegetarian options) and soda are available for lunch each day."

Registration requested.

SAT 4/9 (and SUN 4/10)

10am to 5pm
Annual Boston Poetry Marathon
at Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

Saturday -- 10am to 4:45pm
Sunday -- 1pm to 4:40pm

Over 60 poets are doing 10 minutes each to celebrate National Poetry Month. If you want to read a poem, there's an 'open mic' segment on Saturday from 1:30pm to 3pm. I assume you can read someone else's poetry...

56 major and emerging poets plus six high school students, plus Sam Cornish, Boston’s first and current poet laureate.

SAT 4/9

1pm
"Scotland v England Olympics"
at The Haven, 2 Perkins St, Jamaica Plain
FREE

I mentioned Tartan Week stuff at The Haven on Monday, and the fun is wrapping up.

Watch teams battle in such death-defying feats such as haggis hurling, Scotch egg race, and... hopscotch.

Yes, they're planning to go out to the Hi-Lo parking lot and hurl haggis as far as they can.

On Sunday, there's an art show inspired by sheep. Hoots man!

SAT 4/9

6pm to 11pm
Record Hospital Fest: Night #2
at The Democracy Center, 45 Mt. Auburn St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$10 / All Ages

Feat: Bare Wires, Little Gold, Weed Hounds, Girlfriends, Dead Dog, Four Eyes, Fat Shadow

I missed the first night of this one. Between you and me, I think Night #2 is a better lineup. Girlfriends are one of my favorites. I've liked Four Eyes. I know Bare Wires and Fat Shadow are touring from Oakland and Bloomington, IN, respectively, and they rock too.

SAT 4/9

9:30pm
The Hush Now, Eddie Japan, Alta Mira, Firehouse Babies
at PA's Lounge, 345 Somerville Ave, Somerville (Union Sq)
$10 / 21+

I dig The Hush Now and Eddie Japan, so there is more going on besides the Rumble.

SAT 4/9

9:30pm
Rock n' Roll Rumble Preliminaries: Night #5
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$9

Feat: Sidewalk Driver (11:45pm), Black Thai (11pm), The Year Million (10:15pm), Cradle To The Grave (9:30pm)

Oh, boy. The last Rumble preliminary is going to rock. The word on the virtual street is that Sidewalk Driver is favored to win, so I'm guessing the other three will bring their A-game to the gig. And Sidewalk Driver has plenty of A-game.

I still like Boston Band Crush's coverage of this year's participants including a 24-song sampler from Rumblers.
