WED 5/11: Smut, Film, Music

Because a weekend post is more important than long Wednesday post.

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 5/11

6:30pm
Smut Slam 2: "Spill It"
at Kennedy's Midtown, 42 Province St, Boston (Downtown Crossing)
$7 / $5 students with ID / 21+

The first Smut Slam was supposedly jam-packed (you, cheeky monkeys!) so they're at it again.

About 8 people will be chosen to tell their true, sexy stories on the theme of "secrets we kept or try to keep in our sex lives."

During the intermission, there'll be a separate "Iron Smut" contest where people will have a chance to challenge hostess Cameryn Moore (aka the Phone Whore) in a 2-minute improv using 3 randomly chosen words.

WED 5/11 (thru THUR 5/12)

7pm, 9:30pm
48 Hour Film Project: Premiere Screenings
at Kendall Square Cinema, One Kendall Square, Cambridge
$10

It has to be difficult to make a short film from beginning to end in 48 hours. On this past Friday, the filmmakers were given a genre, a character, a prop and a line of dialogue that they had to use.

After writing, acting, and editing in 48 hours, they turned in the final product on Sunday night. About 80 entries are being shown over 6 sessions, and they're usually a bunch of decent results.

WED 5/11

8pm
All Things Horror Presents: "The Darkness Within" + Shorts
at Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square, Somerville
$5 / 17+

Somehow I've missed several months of Somerville's indie-horror night. In case you'd like to see a psychological thriller that was filmed in Revere (scary!).

Director Dom Portalla will be in attendance for a post-film discussion.

Grab a beer and popcorn, and you're still spending less than a movie at most theaters.

WED 5/11

8pm
Jim's Big Ego
at Johnny D's, 17 Holland St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
$10 / 21+

For a long time, it seemed JBE almost exclusive performed "The Ego & The Oracle", which is a brilliant exercise in song and soothsaying in a generally humorous way. Minus the advice, the wheel and metaphysics; it's wall-to-wall spectacularly melodic and sardonic tunes.

WED 5/11

9:30pm
Destry, Communipaw, The First Annual
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$10 / 18+

Young, fresh, and bright -- it's not all rainbows and ice cream tonight, but I feel like this is feel-good, folky indie-rock. I saw someone had compared Destry to She & Him, but they're not that precious while sounding equally delicious in a different way.
