THUR 6/9: Ice Cream, Film, Music

It's a brief day again. How is it Thursday already?

Keep cool!

--------------------------------------------------------------

THUR 6/9

Noon to 8pm
Scooper Bowl
at City Hall Plaza, Boston (Govt Center)
$8 / $4 for ages 3 to 9 ($15 -- 3 day access)

All-you-can-eat ice cream is still good, and today is supposed to be a scorcher. Cold, sweet comfort is tempered by sweaty, sticky kids running about.

Remember: proceeds benefit the Jimmy Fund/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

THUR 6/9

7pm
"Best of" 48 Hour Film Project
at Kendall Square Cinema, One Kendall Square, Cambridge
$10

After the dozens of filmmaking teams complete a short from start to finish over one weekend, all of them are screened in batches. Tonight's program is considered the best 15 of last month's submissions. To paraphrase "Highlander", there can only be one "Best Film" -- but there will be other prizes awarded...

THUR 6/9

9:15pm
The Rex Complex, Railbird, Jennah Bell
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$8 / 21+

If you didn't catch Rex Complex/Railbird last week, there's one more chance before who knows when they'll come back to the Boston area.

There's a bunch of peculiar rootsy, world-influenced rock from The Rex Complex and bluesy folk-rock from Railbird. I first heard Jennah Bell a couple months ago, and I remember liking a song she recorded on a train platform late at night.

THUR 6/9

Allo Darlin' (11:30pm), Cuffs (10:30pm), One Happy Island (9:30pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10

If you like your indie-pop on the twee side, you might be sweating in your cardigan sweater over this show. It seems like English group Allo Darlin' is gaining some buzz since I've been seeing them mentioned by different sources. I like 'em as well as our local bands One Happy Island and Cuffs, which is a post-Pants Yell project.
