SAT 4/30: Race, Science, Art, Shakespeare, Sailing, Music

Even though I should've had this up last night, most of the below are also happening tomorrow...?

It's the 25th anniversary of "Top Gun", so they're showing on the big screen ($9.50) around the country today at 12:30pm and MON 5/2 at 7pm. There's a list of AMC theaters that are screening it. "Guests will receive a theatre-sized commemorative poster while supplies last."

Keep in mind that the Boston Cyberarts Festival is still in swing.

--------------------------------------------------------------

SAT 4/30

10am to the slowest paddler
Run of the Charles Canoe & Kayak Race
from Great Plain Ave, Needham to Herter Park, Brighton
FREE

Similar to the Head of the Charles, canoes & kayaks race on the Charles but for much longer distances. There is an all-day festival at the finish line next to Artesani/Herter Park with food vendors, etc.

Stand along any part of the river to watch canoes and kayaks paddle quickly, or go to the end in Brighton. It should be in full swing by noon.

SAT 4/30 (thru SUN 5/8)

Various Times
Cambridge Science Festival
At Various Locations
Many FREE

Some of us believe that science is fun. Not all of the cool, cheap stuff is happening at MIT, but wouldn't expect a bunch of it would be? Today's schedule includes free admission to the MIT Museum (10am to 5pm) and a bunch of activities on campus (11am to 4pm).

Oh, and a timeline of the Earth's history has been set up along 500 meters of Memorial Drive for the duration of the Festival. There are guided tours on the weekends (11am & 1pm).

SAT 4/30 (and SUN 5/1)

Noon to 6pm
Somerville Open Studios
all over Somerville
FREE

There's a lot of painting, sculpting, photography, assembling, etc around Somerville. Over 300 artists in about 100 locations show you what they've been making. (They'll even sell you stuff.) Look for orange balloons.

If I were you, I'd take the T and walk around (or take the trolley). I read their tips, and I agree with them.

If you start in Davis Sq or Union Sq, you'll be sure to find maps/pamphlets in stands where you can see all the open studios and the trolley route. strategically located around town.

If you're in Teele Sq, don't forget to hear some cool music at the Nave Gallery.

If you go by Cedar Street Studios -- #42 on the map -- say hello to Andrea; she's friendly.

SAT 4/30 (and SUN 5/1)

11am to 6pm
Brookline Open Studios
all over Brookline [PDF]
FREE

Brookline artists are also opening their doors, but I'm partial to my Somerville homies.

SAT 4/30

12:30pm to 4:30pm
2nd Annual Shakespeare Parade, Festival and SLAM
at Palmer St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

It was the Bard's birthday this week, so why not celebrate like last year? The Actors' Shakespeare Project and Orfeo Group along with others have put together performances and activities in Shakespeare's honor.

Schedule:

12:30pm -- Parade leaves Hotel Veritas
1pm to 3:30pm -- Activities & Performances
3pm to 4:30pm -- Shakespeare SLAM at Redline (free food, cash bar)
5:30pm -- Cake and ice cream on Palmer St (or inside Harvard Coop)
The Shakespeare SLAM is an assortment of scenes, songs, etc that are inspired by the birthday boy. While it's free, you have to pick up tickets at the Orfeo Group table on Palmer Street.

The 4th annual Bookish Ball is also happening from noon to 5pm where you get a 'passport' at the Harvard Square Business Assoc. table and you walk around the boosters and have it stamped to win a prize.

SAT 4/30 (and SUN 5/1)

1pm to 5pm
Sailing Open House
at Boston Sailing Center, Lewis Wharf, Boston (North End)
FREE

The weather is cooperating for a nice little sail in the Harbor. Remember it will be cooler on the water.

"No sailing experience necessary. All ages welcome. Sailors of all abilities are welcome."

SAT 4/30 (and SUN 5/1)

7:30pm
"B.B. King: Why I Sing the Blues"
at Berklee Performance Center, 136 Mass Ave, Boston (Back Bay)
$10

No, BB KIng is not performing. This is an original musical created by Berklee students, and they've told the story of the blues master's life that includes many of King's classic numbers.

Although BB won't be there, killer-guitarist Vernon Reid of Living Colour and the amazing Nona Hendryx who sang in Labelle before going solo.

Maybe watch some of it on the web tonight and see it all tomorrow.

SAT 4/30

9pm
Tom Waits Tribute
at PA's Lounge, 345 Somerville Ave, Somerville (Union Sq)
$10 / 21+

Feat: Coyote Kolb, Dan Baker, Danielle Miraglia, Dave Aaronoff & The Protagonists, Joe Fletcher, Movers & Shakers, The Resurrectionists, Sleepy Very Sleepy, Tig & Bean, Tim Gearan, Tony the Bookie

Tom Waits is still cool even though he's been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

There are lots of excellent bands, and the songs will be excellent regardless of the performances. Most of these tribute shows at PA's have a 'second stage', so there's little down time.

Actually, this is also a benefit for the Somerville Homeless Coalition, and Tom has raised funds and awareness of the homelessness issue.

[Facebook]

SAT 4/30

9pm
Old Jack, Sam Otis Hill, Newton Gang
at Rosebud Bar & Grill (behind Diner), 381 Summer St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
$10 / 21+

Fresh from their appearance in the Rock 'n Roll Rumble Finals (congrats to winners John Powhida International Airport), Old Jack is joined by a couple country-flavored acts. I normally hear a soulful-rock vibe in Old Jack, but there's a lot of country sympathy in there.

SAT 4/30

9:30pm
Andrea Gillis, Banditas
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$10 / 21+

One Friday at the Plough & Stars, the Andrea Gillis Band were the perfect bar band: mowing through songs like a locomotive with Andrea's powerful pipes in front. Then she sang and strutted on the bar. The clearance is too low for a repeat this weekend...

For the second night of the CD Release party, Banditas will open before 2 sets of Andrea & company.

FRI 4/29: Talk & Rock-plus

One would think with the Freedom Trail running through our city that we'd remember our country doesn't belong to an obsolete monarchy. Fine, we're allies now. End of mini-rant, but I don't have to care about the prince's wedding.

At the Old State House from noon to 2pm, the Bostonian Society and the British Consulate General will give commoners a chance to sign an official wedding register and raise a toast to Will & Kate while watching a video of the ceremony.

--------------------------------------------------------------

FRI 4/29

7:30pm
Howie Carr, "Hitman: The Untold Story of Johnny Martorano"
at Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard St, Brookline (Coolidge Corner)
FREE

Another annoying person, Gilbert Gottfried, is signing books at the Harvard Coop and probably not doing much else. At least Howie will talk about crime in Boston.

FRI 4/29

The Acre (Midnight), Kingsley Flood (10:50pm), Pearl & the Beard (9:55pm), Bandit Kings (9pm), Ugly Purple Sweater (8:20pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / 18+

Wow, this is a pretty sweet gig! I've been a fan of Kingsley Flood's rootsy-rock-that's-more-rock for a while (probably wrote their first CD review). And The Acre have a strong new CD of folky-gazey rock.

It's also the first night of Kingsley Flood's mini-tour with Pearl & the Beard and Ugly Purple Sweater. One name sounds slightly dirty to me, and the other makes me unpleasantly grimace; but both are delightfully quirky acoustic groups from NYC and DC respectively.

Good stuff!

FRI 4/29

9pm
Guillermo Sexo, Mount Peru, The Russians, Muy Cansado
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / 18+

This may be an example of Cambridge being more interesting than Somerville, because there's another sweet show around the corner from the one listed above. It's louder and noisier, but there's not a bad band in the bunch. Good stuff too!

FRI 4/29

9pm
Boston League of Women Wrestlers, Lovewhip, The Cinnamon Fuzz
at Rosebud Bar & Grill (behind Diner), 381 Summer St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
$7 / 21+

Sure, BLOWW is campy. This is still real people throwing each other around. It's probably less corny that professional wrestlers and WAY more fun than a high-school team.

They've got two bands that sound like a electro/synthy party, so be ready.

FRI 4/29 (and SAT 4/30)

9:30pm
Andrea Gillis: 2-Night CD Release
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$10 / 21+

Friday: Muck & The Mires
Saturday: Banditas

One Friday at the Plough & Stars, the Andrea Gillis Band were the perfect bar band: mowing through songs like a locomotive with Andrea's powerful pipes in front. Then she sang and strutted on the bar. The clearance is too low for a repeat this weekend...

If you can't make it to the first night of the rock 'n roll party. There's a great opener each night with Andrea & company doing 2 sets.

FRI 4/29

10pm
The Pill w/ Soft Pyramids
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$5 / 21+

Hey, it's the only indie-rock dance party that I'd consider going to, and Soft Pyramids are rocking out a spiffy, Strokesy sound.

THUR 4/28: Art, Talk, Film, DJs, Live Music

Grrr... Was hoping to have some weekend stuff up already. Will be brief to get going on that.

The annual Birds & Bards Festival begins today, and there are various avian events through Saturday at Boston Nature Center, Forest Hills Cemetery, Arnold Arboretum, and Franklin Park.

D'oh! I forgot to add the free Hemposium at Suffolk's Donahue Building. There'll be talks, music, video clips, and hemp displays in anticipation of Hemp History Week.

--------------------------------------------------------------

THUR 4/28

6pm to 8pm
"Move Me": Opening Reception
at AXIOM gallery, Green Street T, ground floor level, about 150 Green St, Jamaica Plain
FREE

Feat: Chris Fitch, Arthur Ganson, Tom Haney, Steve Hollinger, Erica Von Schilgen

Although kinetic sculpture may be on the 'low-tech' end of where art meets science, but it's really friggin' cool. (The Arthur Ganson exhibit at the MIT Museum is the best reason to visit the place.)

An informal artist talk is scheduled for 7pm.

This gallery in the T station is like a perennial cyberarts festival, so it's not surprising this is part of the current Festival.

On view through SAT 5/28

THUR 4/28

6:30pm to 8pm
"Trade-Offs: Can Free Trade Be Fair?": Discussion
at Moot Court Room, Suffolk University, 120 Tremont St, Boston (Beacon Hill)
FREE

Although I'm not a fan, Jeff Jacoby might not spoil the discussion about free trade with Rodney North of Equal Exchange and libertarian economics professor Donald Boudreaux (George Mason).

THUR 4/28

7pm to 8:30pm
Demetri Martin, "This Is A Book": Reading & Signing
at Harvard Coop, Level 3, 1400 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

It's not like watching his show, but I imagine his reading will still be somewhat amusing.

THUR 4/28

7pm
"The Town": Screening and Q&A
at Devlin Hall, 140 Comm Ave, Chestnut Hill (BC campus)
FREE

As part of Boston College's Arts Festival that's happening through the weekend, author Chuck Hogan will participate for the post-film discussion.

His novel "The Prince of Thieves" was the film's source material.

THUR 4/28

9pm
Red Bull Thre3Style Competition
at Brighton Music Hall, 158 Brighton Ave, Allston
$5 / 18+

Competing DJs: Brek. One, Bruan Draper, Dj Lazee Boy, Jay-K, Dj Midas, Drama, DJ E-marce, C DUBS

Nine local DJ's get 15 minutes to get the dance floor bouncing by playing 3 different genres. The winner qualifies for the US Nationals.

Local hip-hopper Akrobatik will host the event, and DJ Vice will keep spinning after the competitiors.

THUR 4/28

Oh No Oh My (11:30pm), Oranjuly (10:30pm), Pray For Polanski (9:30pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10

The warm, sunny weather couldn't have arrived on a better day for this show. Austin's Oh No Oh My (try saying it, "Oh no! Oh my!") play an easygoing indie-pop that will go nicely with Oranjuly's crunchy keyboard-laden sounds and the spunky rockabilly-flavored indie-rock of Pray For Polanski.

THUR 4/28

Jill Goldberg (10:30pm), Tsion Aberra (9:30pm)
at Tommy Doyle's, 96 Winthrop St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$5 / 21+

An online pal sent me a heads-up about Jill Goldberg, so I wasn't expecting much -- then I was already wowed almost immediately by her fantastic voice. Give it a listen and take in some wonderful tunes. Tsion Aberra will open up with some rather tasty soul/R&B stylings.

Should be a good time, especially if you show up early and hang out, so you can put that $5 cover on the bar for a drink...

WED 4/27: Ice Cream, Comedy, Poetry, Writing, Film, Music

Dude, I'm a little bummed that the Independent Film Festival of Boston has raised their ticket prices to $11. Still there are loads of cool films to see between today and WED 5/4. (Screenings will be held at different theatres around town.)

The Boston Cyberarts Festival is still on view through SUN 5/8 with performances and events.

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 4/27

5pm to 10pm
31 Cent Scoop Night
at participating Baskin-Robbins/Dunkin Donuts Locations
$0.31 per scoop

The sun is coming out for a sunny day. Hang in there for some cheap ice cream (limit: 3 scoops per person). I checked again, and these are the 5 closest stores to Boston:

- Cambridge (1 Bow St, Harvard Sq)
- Cambridge (1 Broadway, Kendall Sq)
- Belmont (52 Church St)
- Lexington (10 Woburn St)
- South Weymouth (755 Main St)
"At participating stores while supplies last."

Baskin-Robbins is also donating $100k to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

WED 4/27 (thru SUN 5/1)

7:30pm to 11:15pm
Geek Week V: "The Saga Continues"
at ImprovBoston, 40 Prospect St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 (mainstay shows) / $7 (studio shows)

Most of the shows are 25 minutes long, but it's technically $10 or less for nerdy comedy. Some of tonight's themes are video games, space exploration, dodgeball, hip-hop, Dungeons & Dragons, Civil War bromance, and time travel in the style of "Back to the Future" & "Doctor Who".

WED 4/27

8pm
Cantab Team Selection Finals
at Cantab Lounge - Underground, 738 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge (between Central Sq & Harvard Sq)
$5

The National Poetry Slam is going to be in Boston this year, and the Cantab is one of our most active slam hubs with quite a few wins. Five of the performers will be chosen to make the "home team".

Only 3 days left in National Poetry Month...

WED 4/27

8pm to 9:30pm
"Narrative Journalism: Not Just the Facts, Story Too": The Writer's Life Series
at Blacksmith House, 56 Brattle St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$6

They say, "Truth is stranger than fiction." That doesn't always mean you can simply write it an make it interesting.

Ethan Gilsdorf and David Valdes Greenwood are experts in "creative non-fiction". (I should probably go to this class, but I have dinner plans.)

Register at the bottom of the page.

WED 4/27 (and THUR 4/28)

8pm
Double Feature: "Wild Strawberries" & "The Seventh Seal"
at Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$9.75 / $7.75 students / $6.75 seniors

If you don't want to see new movies, a double feature of classic Ingmar Bergman isn't a bad option. The screening -- along with some Truffaut, Fellini and Kurosawa next week -- is in tribute to one of the Brattle's co-founders who recently passed away.

Also on Thursday: ("Wild Strawberries" -- 5:30pm, 9:30pm; "The Seventh Seal" -- 7:30pm)

WED 4/27

Davina Yannetty (11:50pm), Melvern Taylor & his Fabulous Meltones (11:10pm), Niki Luparelli (10:45pm), Corin Ashley (10:20pm), Bliss Blood (9:50pm), Uke Springsteen (9:30pm), One Happy Island (9pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$8

This gig is also dubbed "The Uke-Arist: A Suprisingly Secular Celebration of the Ukulele".

Even just a couple of these top-notch songsters who happen to be handy tiny stringed-instruments would be good night. This Hawaiian cup overfloweth with rocky, poppy, folky, jazzy, sassy tunes.

WED 4/27

9:30pm
Treat Her Right
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$8 / 21+

With special guests: Tim Gearan, Jess Tardy, The Heygoods

They're going to record this show, and the timing makes me wonder if it has anything to do with the IFFBoston screening of the Mark Sandman documentary on Friday night.

Before Sandman took his low-rock sound around the world, Treat Her Right was one of his earlier bands with Jim Fitting, David Champagne, and Morphine drummer Billy Conway. After a tribute show a couple years ago, they played a pretty regular gig at Toad for a while. Maybe they want to capture the current version.

I'm guessing more friends may show up to play...

TUES 4/26: Stories, Drawing, Surf, Comedy

The Independent Film Festival of Boston starts tomorrow, and Newbury Comics is giving away 2 all-access passes. You have to enter today.

It looks like a good evening for a grilled cheese. If you're near 'Cambridgeside', Restaurant Dante (inside the Royal Sonesta Hotel) serves up grilled cheeses with a twist on Tuesdays after 5:30pm in their bar and lounge. It changes every week and you can't be too disappointed at $2 each. Especially considering the awesome mini-burger they serve on the bar menu.

--------------------------------------------------------------

TUES 4/26

6pm to 8:30pm
Mass Mouth "Big Mouth Off": Story Slam Finals
at Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

I listed a bunch of the Story Slam events over the last 6 months, and now it's time to hear the 18 winners of the various nights compete for the grand prize. There will be some audience participation in between stories.

TUES 4/26

6pm
Will Oldham, "Slow Fade": Reading
at Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline
$2

With Ben Chasny, Elisa Ambrogio, Wayne Rogers

I'm not familiar with Rudolph Wurlitzer's 1984 novel "Slow Fade", but it's being released as an audiobook from Chicago indie label Drag City that's partially read by Will Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy.

Oldham will read along with musician friends adding a soundtrack.

TUES 4/26

7pm
"Little Black Topsy and the Magical White Fairy Soap"
at Central Square Theater, 450 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$5 to $15 suggested donation

Live performance is blended with video to create what may be a rather twisted fairy tale about a black girl who goes on a quest to find the titular cleansing agent.

After the performance, there will be a panel discussion about the play's relevance on race and gender issues.

Feel free to give what you can, because proceeds benefit the YWCA Cambridge.

TUES 4/26

7:30pm to 9:30pm
Dr. Sketchy Boston: Evening Session
at Club Cafe, 209 Columbus Ave, Boston (South End)
$8 / 21+

Feat: Johnny Blazes & Madge of Honor

The monthly Sunday afternoon drawing sessions have borne a sibling event. From first-timers to professionals, all are welcome to have some art fun with no one to tell you what to do.

The art-fun is happening in the back room. Bring something to draw with and to draw on.

TUES 4/26

8pm
Trabants (10pm), Spytones (9pm), Electric Heaters (8pm)
at Johnny D's, 17 Holland St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
$7

Surf is up! Yes, there are actually enough surf-rock bands in the area for multiple nights whether it's on the traditional side or edgy like Trabants.

TUES 4/26

9pm
Stand-Up Night
at Enormous Room, 567 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE

Feat: Sameer Naseem, Laura Crawford, Todd Womack, Matt Donaher, Sharkee Katz

As I've said before, I have nothing against paying for comedy but it's nice to laugh for free. Even if you don't get a cheap drink, you didn't pay a cover to see funny people.

MON 4/25: Wine, Play, Magic, Trivia, Music

Hey, the Boston Cyberarts Festival has begun, and there are loads of weird, cool stuff on display around town.

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 4/25

5:30pm to 7:30pm
"Squares of Somerville" Taste Fest
at Ball Square Fine Wines, 716 Broadway, Somerville (Ball Sq)
FREE / 21+

I've stopped here on Fridays for beer and wine tastings, and I usually walk out with something.

Tonight's "Squares of Somerville" fest include's vegan bites from Teele Square's True Bistro and Thai treats from Union Square's Ronnarong Tapas Bar.

MON 4/25 (and TUES 4/26)

After each performance, there will be a panel discussion about the play's relevance on race and gender issues.

Feel free to give what you can, because proceeds benefit the YWCA Cambridge.

MON 4/25

7pm
Boston Skeptics in the Pub: "Magic, Mystery and the Search for Truth"
at Tommy Doyle's, 96 Winthrop St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

Feat: Dezrah the Strange

On his website, Dezrah's show is described as:

a 30-45 minute demonstration of "psychic" abilities that encourages critical thinking and healthy skepticism when dealing with claims of the "paranormal".
These things usually last for a couple hours, so there may be some organized discussion afterwards, then skeptical mixing -- or maybe not. Don't assume anything!

MON 4/25

8pm
Nerdnite: The Trivia Night
at Middlesex Lounge, 315 Mass Ave, Cambridge (near Central Sq)
FREE

If magic and skepticism isn't for you, there's some nerdy trivia this month instead of Nerdnite's usual presentations.

They say, "...teams will be limited to 6 people max. But if you come with more than that we expect that there will be a fair amount of new team formation as nerds mingle."

MON 4/25

9:30pm
earthquake party!, Big Eyes, The Scamps, The Clippers, Boo Radley
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$7 / 18+

One of the Pelly Twins lives in Boston and the other in NYC. As you might expect, they put together really good shows full of noisy, punky rock and indie-pop like this one. Don't bother going if you're not ready to have a good time.

MON 4/25

10pm
Bobb Trimble's Flying Spiders, Fedavees
at ZuZu!, 474 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE / 21+

From the stuff I've listened to, Bobb Trimble definitely has the trippy folky thing down solid. He's been doing it way before the current crop of dudes in this style (who might consider Bobb an influence). Fedavees add a fuzzy ambience to the table.

SUN 4/24: Sunday Night Off-Topic Video

Well, this has been what the Interwebs call an 'epic failure' of weekend CTB.

My Saturday post didn't go up, then I went to the Wine Riot and had myself a merry ol' time.

I cooked all morning to feed a dozen-plus people today and didn't blog squat!

Now I might download the new Doctor Who then hopefully get a big jump on the 'cheap thrills' week ahead.

Keep in mind there's plenty of baseball season to go. The Sox are back on track -- thanks to me (wait for my YouTube video). Until then John Krasinski threatens Alec Baldwin:

FRI 4/22: Bring Mug, Free Coffee or Tea

If you work downtown, there's also a free daytime concert on the Greenway -- and more Friday cheapness on the calendar.

--------------------------------------

All Day
Earth Day Travel Cup Coffee (or Tea) Deal
at any Starbucks locations
FREE w/ your own mug

Yeah, it's Earth Day and lines will probably be longer at Starbucks shops in North America.

It seemingly doesn't matter the size or shape. If you don't use one of their paper cups, Starbucks will put coffee or tea in it for free.

As they say, "Your choice of brew, hot or iced".

You can buy one of theirs at a 20% discount. (Or maybe CVS might have a cheaper one?)

Since I don't usually go there, Starbucks will give you a 10-cent discount any day of the year for bringing your own mug...

Thursday, April 21, 2011

THUR 4/21: Godzilla, Comedy, Music

If you're near City Hall Plaza around 1:30pm, there's a good chance you can get a free Boloco burrito to hear Mayor Menino make an announcement about a bike-sharing program.

Better than a kick in the head!

--------------------------------------------------------------

THUR 4/21

6pm
"Godzilla" in Japan and the World: Screening & Discussion
at Room 906, Photonics Center, 8 Saint Mary's St, Boston (BU campus)
FREE

The original Japanese film supposedly has a deeper anti-nuclear message, and I'm not sure if I've ever seen it.

Improve your film cred and hear a presentation from historian Gregory Pflugfelder (Columbia) who is writing a book on "Godzilla" around the world.

THUR 4/21

8pm to 10pm
Comedy Mixtape
at Arts at the Armory Cafe, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville (Spring Hill)
$5 / 18+

Feat: Mike Abramson, Niraj Shah, Jacob Simon, Max Fox, Sean Wilkinson, Ken Reid, Shawn Carter, Al Park

There's a new monthly comedy night (every third Thursday) hosted by Dan Burgess inside the strange white building of Highland Ave (FYI: #88 or #90). I recognize several of these names, and there should be many funny things said.

If I'm correct, beer and wine should be available -- because they loosen your laugh muscle...

THUR 4/21

8pm
Girls Rock Camp: Volunteer Mixer & Benefit
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / 18+

Feat: Sister Spaceman (8pm), Apple Betty (8:20pm), Banditas (8:40pm), Bunny's A Swine (9pm), Carolyn Castellano & Sandy Z (9:20pm), Cathy Cathodic (9:40pm), Mary Lou Lord (10pm), The Nose Jobs (10:20pm), Pinecone Teeth (10:40pm), Scarce (11pm), Shepherdess (11:20pm), Ajda and Tony (11:40pm), Aerochix (Midnight)

You don't have to volunteer to show up, hang out, and listen to the tunes. On the other hand, you may want to help by the end of the night after hearing lots of women rock to support future generations.

Remind yourself that being there and paying the cover is helping.

THUR 4/21

9:15pm
Bury Me Standing: Residency w/ Sweet Soubrette, Now You
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$10 / 21+

At the core of Bury Me Standing, one finds the drummer from Humanwine and the marimba player from Goli who forge their own dark, strange, psychedelic Balkan music. They did a previous residency at Lizard Lounge in October; you can either be surprised when you go or take a video glimpse.

Different guests have been opening each week, and there are a couple goodies tonight with Sweet Soubrette's folk-rock-with-ukulele and violin-percussion duo Now You.

WED 4/20: Talk, TV, Film, Music

I checked Flickr for a funny "420" image, and I just went with this one.

The first time I heard about Neutral Uke Hotel, I flipped a bit because it seemed like clever synthesis of a classic album and musical trend. Turns out that the idea has legs. The musicians are playing tonight at Brighton Music Hall (7pm, $12) together and separately (as Golden Bloom & Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library) as well as going on not-their-first tour. Definitely worth a listen.

BTW: If you have a college ID, you probably already know you can go inside Fenway Park and hang out in the bleacher area from noon to 6pm for some >free fun 'n games. I imagine they won't let you leave to go to a nearby bar, so be ready.

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 4/20

5:30pm to 8:30pm
"Freedom Riders": Screening & Discussion
at JFK Presidential Library & Museum, Columbia Point, Boston
FREE w/ RSVP

Usually JFK Library events fill up before the day of the event, but there is room to watch the American Experience show "Freedom Riders" then listen to a panel discussion that includes civil rights leader Bernard Lafayette who participated in the Freedom Rides that put the integration of buses into practice.

Callie Crossley of WGBH radio moderates.

There are still a few spots to see the related exhibit at the WGBH Studios, if you have some time during the day.

WED 4/20

6:30pm to 8pm
"Boston's Fairest: First 50 years of Women in the BPD": Lecture
at Orientation Room, 1st Fl, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

Women have been protecting Boston in a police uniform for 90 years -- and they weren't given guns initially.

BPD spokesperson Kim Gaddy and BPD archivist Margaret R. Sullivan share some of the early tales of bravery and intrigue.

WED 4/20

7pm
"Rooms Down the Hallway": Reading
at Hallway Gallery, 66A South St, Jamaica Plain
FREE

Feat: Stace Budzko, Sue Williams, Dawn Dorland Perry

I just like that this place is pretty much a wide hallway...

WED 4/20

7pm
48 Hour Film Project: "Best of the First Ten Years"
at Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline
$9.75 / $6.75 seniors, children

Over the last 10 years, thousands of short films have been made in 48 hours from beginning to end -- writing, filming, editing -- and Jennifer Lopez hasn't been in any of them!

A third of tonight's 15 selections were made for Boston's 48HFP weekends; besides the other domestic films are works from London, Tel Aviv, and Johannesburg.

The next local 48 Hour Film Project is happening in a couple weeks, so maybe you'll be inspired to enter.

WED 4/20

8pm
Iguana Music Fund Night
at Club Passim, 47 Palmer St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

Feat: Kristin Andreassen, Andy Cambria & Sarah Green, The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library, Mark Erelli, Margaret Glaspy, Zack Hickman, Naseem Khuri, Amanda Kowalski, Kimber Ludiker, Austin Nevins, Dami Noah, Nikola Radan, Maria Sangiolo, Sub Rosa songwriting members (Amy Correia, Sean Staples, Dinty Child & David Champagne)

Patronage of the arts is alive and seemingly well, when 17 musicians have been given $30,000 in grants for their projects.

Tonight's show featuring the Iguana Music Fund recipients was supposed to be $10, but another donation was made to let people in for free.

Hear some music and what these folks are going to do with the money.

WED 4/20

Personal & the Pizzas (11:20pm), Barreracudas (10:25pm), Thick Shakes (9:35pm), Wide Iris (8:45pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$8

I dig Thick Shakes because they churn out golden, garagey nuggets of rock as if they could been on one of those compilations. A sign of awesomeness is when a band reminds me of something I already love without sounding like an imitator. Thick Shakes do it. (And if you're hip and/or own a turntable, they'll have a 7" record for sale.)

Barreracudas do a good job of doing it in a punky, early powerpop way. Wide Iris is a bunch of guys who played the Rumble over 10 years and have recently decided to rock together again -- good stuff! I'm not so hot on Personal & the Pizzas, because I prefer The Ramones. You might like them, or you could head home early...

WED 4/20

9pm
Lake Street Dive, Mr. Sister
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$10 / 21+

I'm just going leave what I wrote for the first of Lake Street Dive's 2-night thing, except that I think tonight's opener Mr. Sister is some pretty amazing singing of songs:

Let's not nitpick that Lake Street Dive's self-titled album was released about 5 months ago, these New England Conservatory grads have returned for 2 nights at the wonderfully intimate Lizard Lounge.

My standard description of their sound was "jazzy country-soul-folk-pop"; the new collection has them creating delightfully agile pop with those other flavors occasionally woven through here and there.

They just might be able to trick a wide audience into liking good music...

TUES 4/19: Music, Film, Etc

Yeah, I forgot to post before I ran in the marathon yesterday...

--------------------------------------------------------------

TUES 4/19

7pm to 9pm
Kerry Leva, "Vocal Production in Electronic Dance Music": Seminar
at Room 112, 22 The Fenway, Boston (Berklee/Fens)
FREE

The Together Boston Festival has begun, and there are a bunch of electronic music events happening this week -- some free or under $10.

This will supposedly a basic session about incorpating vocals into electronic music that might be instructive for any burgeoning engineers/producer.

If you go, you can also get into to ElecSonic Synesthesia at Phoenix Landing (9pm tonight), so that's a $5 savings on top of the knowledge you gain. (The info says, "Dress in white!"?)

I'd mention the Bad Rabbits (etc) DJ party practically across the street at Enormous Room, but I hate waiting in line.

TUES 4/19

7pm
"Persepolis"
at Harvard Film Archive, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

When this animated feature came out a few years ago, it received many positive reviews. It's mainly one of the filmmaker's autobiographical tale about her life in (and out of) Iran before and after the Islamic revolution.

If I recall, the black and white style is similar to a graphic novel that served as source material.

(In multiple languages with subtitles)

TUES 4/19

8pm
"Unreliable Narrator" Showcase
at Johnny D's, 17 Holland St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
$10

You've got to have a wicked sense of humor and big brass balls for a production called "2010: Our Hideous Future: The Musical!" that takes place in "New Malden" of an alternate universe. Tonight's variety show will raise money for a summer tour.

Music: Kristen Ford, Mei Ohara, Songs from "2010: Our Hideous Future..."

Comedy: Jenny Zigrino, Ryan Darmody, Perfect Monster, The Unreliable Narrator Podcast Group

Storytelling: Brad Smith, Michael Anderson, Tina Stoner

From what I've heard and seen in the past, this should be a fun show.

TUES 4/19 (and WED 4/20)

9pm
Lake Street Dive: Two-Night CD Release
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$10 / 21+

Tuesday: Robert Sarazin Blake, Jefferson Hamer
Wednesday: Mr. Sister

SUN 4/17: Sunday Night Off-Topic Video

I don't know about you, but I'm excited to see this documentary about Mark Sandman.

With a little research, the local premiere will be at Independent Film Festival Boston on FRI 4/29.

Of course, someone has already seen it, and it's not perfect.

SUN 4/17: Skills, Grilled Cheese, James Joyce, Music

Be industrious or lazy. It's Sunday, so have a good time before the countdown until next weekend begins.

--------------------------------------------------------------

SUN 4/17

10:30pm to 6:30pm
Boston Skillshare 2011
at Simmons College Main Bldg, 300 The Fenway, Boston (The Fens)
$3 to $10 sliding scale donation

How did I forget the SkillShare yesterday? In my defense, it's a month earlier than last year.

There are four 90-minute blocks that usually offer about 10 choices. My favorite title is "Dr Strangelove or How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Spending Money Online For Adult Toys and Learned To Love Home Depot"...

Previous skillshares have been in the main building, so that's a good place to start finding stuff. IT's a sliding scale, so pay what is good for you.

SUN 4/17

1pm to 4pm
Free Grilled Cheese
at Cheeseboy, Train Concourse, 720 Atlantic Ave, Boston (South Station)

A free grilled cheese is a pretty nice treat. Anyone can swing by for a complimentary "Cheeseboy Classic" (American cheese on Italian bread) in celebration of National Grilled Cheese Month.

Limit one per customer.

SUN 4/17

1:45pm
Bloomsday Boston
at Connolly House, 140 Comm Ave, Chestnut Hill (BC campus)
FREE

The organizers quickly admit that it's two months until the actual Bloomsday. This way you can listen to James Joyce-related lectures and Irish music with the college crowd today, then go a Bloom-like drunken ramble in June.

SUN 4/17

2:30pm
"1,000 Cranes": Benefit to Help Rebuild Japan
at Precinct, 70 Union Sq, Somerville (Union Sq)
$10 / 21+

As far as a charitable endeavor to aid Japan, Architecture for Humanity seems like the right idea.

One of the wonderful thing about benefit shows is that you can simply enjoy the music and not have to be invested in the philanthropic aspect...

There are a couple 'surprises' in the afternoon. Kristen Ford and Will Dailey are two of my faves. Should be a good time.

2:30pm -- Leon Rich
2:45pm -- Brendan Hogan
3pm -- Nick Zaino
3:30pm -- "A Surprise for everyone"
4pm -- TBA
4:30pm -- Fortune Teller
5pm - Mearii Japan
5:30pm - Kristen Ford Band
6pm - Dogs on Television
6:30pm - Dave Alpert
7pm -- Creek River String Band
7:30pm -- Acousticana
8pm -- Will Dailey
9pm -- Young Tremors
10pm -- Tokyo Tramps
11pm -- The Day's Weight
There will be a silent auction with goodies from local musicians and restaurants and stores and stuff -- and an area to make paper cranes.

SUN 4/17

8pm
Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra
at Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St, Boston (New England Conservatory/Fenway)
FREE

Feat: Daniel Bernard Roumain & Patrice Rushen

The BCSO is an 80-piece orchestra with a repertoire that includes contemporary, jazz, video game music, etc. (I attended a video game concert was impressed by the scope.)

To give you an idea, the program includes:
Shchedrin, "Piano Concerto No. 1"
Glazunov, "Saxophone Concerto"
Michael Daugherty, "Metropolis Symphony"
"Hip-Hop Essay for Orchestra"
World-renowned violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain and Grammy Award-winning pianist Patrice Rushen will will also join the ensemble at various points for some musical star-power.

SUN 4/17

9pm
Asa Brebner Band
at Toad, 1912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Porter Sq)
FREE

Great American rock 'n roll and roots will fill the tiny venue with a good beer selection. Do you want anything else for free?

Saturday, April 16, 2011

SAT 4/16: Record Store Day, Etc

Well, it wasn't to work out like this.

There is Saturday stuff on the calendar, and my commentary is forthcoming.

Do you like music? You should think about going to a record store today. Many are having specials/freebies -- and you might be reminded that record stores are cool.

Friday, April 15, 2011

FRI 4/15: Blog, Art, Words, Drama, Rock

Have you ever had a taco at Anna's Taqueria? They're still celebrating their 15th anniversary on the 15th of the month. If you buy a burrito, quesadilla, a 'plate' -- or a taco -- you'll get free taco.

I hear they're remaking "Red Dawn" with North Koreans as the bad guys, which is totally ridiculous. The original is the midnight movie at the Coolidge Corner tonight and Saturday night ($9.75). Early Charlie Sheen campy adventure...

--------------------------------------------------------------

FRI 4/15

5:30pm to 7:30pm
Blogging While Brown Meetup
at Microsoft N.E.R.D. Center, One Memorial Dr, 11th Fl., Cambridge (Kendall Sq)
FREE w/ RSVP

5:30pm -- Eat and Connect
5:45pm -- Introductions
6:45pm -- Talk and Q &A with Adam Gaffin
7:15pm -- Connect
There are still a few spots left if you're a blogger of color -- even if it's not brown. Meeting other bloggers can be a positive experience, and listening to Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub will be helpful.

As far as "Introductions", be ready to "introduce themselves, their blog, any current needs, and a goal to meet by our next meetup" in about 3 minutes.

FRI 4/15

6pm to 9pm
Andrew Neumann, "I've No Use For Flowers": Opening Reception
at Meme Gallery, 55 Norfolk St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE

On view through SUN 5/1

More than being excited about this particular multi-media art exhibit about the nature of beauty, I got an email that the Meme Gallery will be closing at the end of May.

I've happened to walk by and go into Meme many times, and it's a really cool little art haven just a block from Central Square. Check it out, especially if you're in the neighborhood.

FRI 4/15

6:30pm
Rick & William Ayers, "Teaching the Taboo: Courage & Imagination in the Classroom": Discussion & Signing
at Harvard Coop, Level 3, 1400 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

It's "Obama-buddy event in Harvard Square" #1 of the night. Besides all of his notoriety, Bill Ayers is an educator.

FRI 4/15

7pm
Deval Patrick, "A Reason to Believe: Lessons from Improbable Life"
at First Parish Church, 3 Church St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$5

And "Obama-buddy event in Harvard Square" #2 of the night. Just an interesting coincidence.

Tickets available at Harvard Book Store, 1256 Mass Ave -- or by phone: 617-661-1515.

FRI 4/15

7pm to 10pm
Progress Festival: "The Universe"
at Pozen Center, about 621 Huntington Ave, Boston (MassArt, enter on Evans Way)
FREE

Isn't this what art school about? Various art works are going to be connected a brain sculpture in the middle of the room.

FRI 4/15 (to SUN 4/17)

Various Times
"Columbinus"
at Calderwood Pavillion, Boston Center for Arts, 539 Tremont Street, Boston (South End)
$10
Friday & Saturday -- 8pm
Sunday -- 2pm
I mentioned a college production of "Waiting for Godot" yesterday (that's running though Saturday), so I thought I'd give a shout-out for this play about the 1999 Columbine shootings. It was originally going to be performed at Lexington High, but it was deemed too violent and profane.

So they're doing it on a professional stage. Good for them!

FRI 4/15

9:30pm
Rock 'n Roll Rumble: Semi-Finals #2
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / 18+

Feat: John Powhida International Airport (11:45pm), Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys (11pm), OldJack (10:15pm), Black Thai (9:30pm)

Congrats to Spirit Kid for winning last night's semi! Again, it's simply too difficult to guess who might win tonight.

It's a bit disappointing that Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents had to drop out tonight due to a previous gig commitment. Still OldJack injects some soul influence into the slot. They rock, John Powhida Intl Airport rocks. Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys rock in their own peculiar way. Black Thai rocks loud. Should be a good night for a Rumble.

FRI 4/15

9:30pm
Come On Pilgrim!, The Diamond Mines
at Tommy Doyle's, 96 Winthrop St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$5 / 21+

I didn't listen to Come On Pilgrim (didn't look hard enough), but I assume they named the band after The Pixies' first album -- so that's a good start. And I've liked leader Josh Caress' solo stuff in the past.

Still, I think The Diamond Mines are a really cool band with good songs and attitude even without a saxophone... If you go upstairs and hang out well before 9:30pm, you probably won't pay the cover.

THUR 4/14: Talk, Fest, Play, Rock

If you're a Pink Floyd fan, tonight's the "Dark Side Of The Moon" night ($10/21+) at Johnny D's. The fantastic Rick Berlin will play an opening set.

The advance tickets were $10 for the Sharon Van Etten, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, St. Claire at Brighton Music Hall (18+). I wish I could tell you how much more they'll be at the door. When I asked, I was told, "a few more."

Or below are some options to learn a thing or get artfully randy or rock out.

--------------------------------------------------------------

THUR 4/14

6pm
Luba Lukova, "Graphic Guts": Annual Dwiggins Lecture
at Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

Wouldn't you know? There is an award for outstanding contribution to book building in New England.

Succeeding in the role of illustrator as social commentator, Luba Lukova has been published in NY Times, Village Voice, WSJ, Time, etc; and her works are in many major permanent collections.

THUR 4/14

7pm to 8pm
Julia Maranan, "The 100 Best Ways to Stop Aging & Stay Young": Talk & Book Signing
at Brighton Branch Library, 40 Academy Hill Rd, Brighton
FREE

This author may be full of bunk, but I liked the idea of little tips that could benefit your health. If you don't consult with a physician like me, do what makes sense...

THUR 4/14

7:30pm to 11pm
Progress Festival: "Destruction & Rebirth"
at Pozen Center, about 621 Huntington Ave, Boston (MassArt, enter on Evans Way)
FREE

Can you guess what's happening based on the theme listed above? Here's a hint: Freud believed in the deep connection of sex and death in the psyche.

Be ready for a lurid evening of art and performance on the relationship between sexuality and art. The event info suggests to "Come dressed to have fun and "bring an open mind", while the "Goddess of Ceremonies" who is -- to paraphrase Rick James -- quite a kinky woman.

There will also be a DJ, because dance is related to sex too.

THUR 4/14 (thru SAT 4/16)

Various Times
"Waiting for Godot"
at Loeb Drama Center, Experimental Theatre, 64 Brattle St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

THUR 4/14 -- 8:30pm
FRI 4/15 -- 7pm
SAT 4/16 -- 2pm & 7pm
Maybe Beckett's famous play is so acclaimed because it's open to interpretation. The sparse action seems to encourage a variety of options for every production. This one will supposedly "highlight the anger and the suppressed fury of the two comrades as they struggle to maintain hope in a context of almost ritualized deferment."

You can reserve free tickets by email; it's good idea to give your name, performance date, and number of tickets.

THUR 4/14

9pm
Girlfriends, Beware the Dangers of a Ghost Scorpion, NYC UFOs, Whir
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / 18+

This is a pretty awesome show that unintentionally makes the statement, "Who cares about the Rock 'n Roll Rumble?" Girlfriends are simply fantastic. There are plenty of noisy/punky/garagey bands out there, but few do it as well as them. Add in some surf-rock, indie-pop, and a bit of shoegaze and it's a party.

THUR 4/14

9:30pm
Rock 'n Roll Rumble: Semi-Finals #1
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / 18+

Feat: Mellow Bravo (11:45pm), Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling (11pm), Sidewalk Driver (10:15pm), Spirit Kid (9:30pm)

There is nothing wrong in caring about the Rock 'n Roll Rumble. You don't even need to care about it, but the next 2 nights feature the cream of the crop from last week's preliminaries. And they are all quality bands. I can't even guess who will move on to the finals.

Whether it's Mellow Bravo's hard rock revival, or DNFMOMD's minimalist art-punk, Sidewalk Driver's glam, or Spirit Kid's jangly crunch; the listener wins.

WED 4/13: Politics, History, Cupcakes, Progress, Music

I can't get into English-language opera, however the Boston Lyric Opera is presenting a discussion and mini-performance at the BPL's Rabb Lecture Hall at 7pm.

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 4/13

6pm
"Campaign 2012: Who's in, Who's out? Who's up, Who's down?"
at JFK Jr Forum, Littauer Bldg, 79 JFK St, Cambridge (Harvard Kennedy School)
FREE

Feat: Alex Castellanos, Chris Cillizza, Mary Anne Marsh, Jonathan Martin

Moderated by Trey Grayson

For the political junkie, maybe you'll get something a little different than the TV shows and blogs. Since we know the President is running again, the real mystery is who will win the Repub nomination.

WED 4/13

6:30pm to 8pm
Benjamin Carp, "Defiance of the Patriots: The Boston Tea Party and the Making of America": Lecture
at Orientation Room, 1st Fl, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

Like many historical milestones, the back story isn't as simple as it was taught in elementary school. Taxes were an issue, but not like hardcore teabaggers probably think. Prof. Carp will suss it out for ya.

WED 4/13

7pm to 9pm
Cupcake Camp 2011
at Arts at The Armory Performance Hall, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville (Spring Hill)
$5 Suggested Donation

Over a dozen professional bakers (and probably a few home baking buffs) are offering a plethora of downsized goodies to sample.

Your $5 donation to try as many as possible while helping Lovin' Spoonfuls, which takes unused food from restaurants and markets for people who need it.

Too bad there probably won't be many leftovers tonight...

[Facebook]

WED 4/13

7pm to 10pm
Progress Festival: "Science and Technology"
at Pozen Center, about 621 Huntington Ave, Boston (MassArt, enter on Evans Way)
FREE

Although I may not have a good handle about what's going on during "Progress Festival" over the next 10 days, there should be quite a bit of multi-discipline, multi-media stimulation. Many events open to the non-MassArt crowd.

For instance, Harvard Prof. George Church is best known for his work on the Human Genome Project -- and he's got a load of other cool ideas. Who knows what he'll say to art students.

WED 4/13

8pm
NEC Symphony w/ David Loebel
at Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St, Boston (New England Conservatory/Fenway)
FREE

Program:

Beethoven, "Coriolan Overture, Op. 62"
Stravinsky, "The Firebird"
Rachmaninoff, "Symphony No. 2"
What is the difference between Monday's Philharmonia concert and tonight's Symphony concert? Two days and a completely different program with a different conductor.

WED 4/13

9pm
Lion Cub, The Family Kitchen, The Gilded Splinters, See London See France, Wolves & The Radio
at O'Brien's, 3 Harvard St, Allston
$7 / 21+

At the second benefit of the night, a bunch of bands are playing to support Saturday/Sundays Bread who provides meals to the Boston's hungry folks on the weekend.

I haven't heard most of these bands before, but there a mostly indie/folky/rootsy sound that's going on (Lion Cub is a pleasant new find) then Wolves & The Radio will get loud and rock it out.

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

TUES 4/12: Ice Cream, Wakefield, Rally

If I had been on the ball, you would've known about Wye Oak playing at Middle East - Upstairs when the advance tickets were $10. You can still go for $12 (looks like tix are still available).

--------------------------------------------------------------

TUES 4/12

Noon to 8pm
Free Cone Day
at participating Ben & Jerry's stores

It's a warm day, so enjoy a free cone of delicious ice cream. This is usually a time when new flavors are introduced (e.g. Stephen Colbert's AmeriCone Dream, available in a scoop), but you can ask for any flavor.

If you'd prefer a cup, I asked nicely and they accommodated me.

There are enough nearby locations to get more than one in 8 hours...

TUES 4/12

Noon
Tim Wakefield, "Knuckler: My Life with Baseball's Most Confounding Pitch": Booksigning
at Barnes & Noble, Prudential Center, 800 Boylston St, Boston (Back Bay)
FREE

Let's not judge Wakefield on last night's appearance. He seems like a great guy with many awesome wins in his 16 years with the Sox -- and he does quite a bit of charitable work.

If I worked near the Prudential Center, I'd go take a look at Wake (and get a free Ben & Jerry's cone at the food court).

TUES 4/12

7pm
"Fight Back! Turning the Tide in The Class War"
at SEIU Local 888, 52 Roland St, Charlestown (near Sullivan Sq)
FREE

Speakers:
Patrick McCabe (SEIU, Local 888): "Labor Fighting Back"
Denise Provost (State Rep., Somerville): "Fighting Back on State Budgets":
Gillian Mason (UMass Boston, MoveOn): "Fighting Back on Higher Ed Funding"

This looked like an interesting event. I don't think you have to volunteer or participate in any future events, but you might be inspired.

It is interesting how it seems like working-class people are sympathizing with millionaires and big-business to the possible detriment of their own interests.

You probably won't agree with everything (or anything) that's said, but that's fine.
