FRI 12/23: Jazz, Punk, Funk, Film

'Silent Night, Deadly Night': midnight at Coolidge Corner Theatre
Happy Festivus!

It's too bad didn't find any public celebrations to share today. Feel free to have the 'Airing of Grievances' and 'Feats of Strength' around your own aluminum pole...

It's going to be slim pickings for cheap fun this weekend, but I think I might have a few idea-ers up later...

--------------------------------------------------------------

FRI 12/23

8pm
Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet, Aych
at Outpost 186, 186 1/2 Hampshire St, Cambridge (Inman Sq)
$10 or b/o

This should be a pretty darn fine jazz gig with a serious group of players. The sextet celebrating the release of a new album that falls somewhere heavy-improv and avant-chamber.

Half of them will also perform as Aych -- I believe it's named after the 3 H's of Jim Hobbs (sax), Mary Halvorson (guitar), and Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet).

FRI 12/23

9pm
The FU's, The Jabbers, Red Line Rebels, Josephin, The Manglers
at Midway Cafe, 3496 Washington St, Jamaica Plain
$10 / 21+

Get ready for a "Punk Rock Christmas Massacre". It actually could be a scary show, because The Jabbers is the band where the infamous GG Allin began his career of musical terror. And The FU's started playing a few gigs again last year after being part of the original Boston hardcore scene.

FRI 12/23

9:30pm
Sasquatch & the Sick-a-Billys, The Mishits, Tex Railer's Doomtown
at O'Brien's, 3 Harvard St, Allston
$8 / 21+

If punkabilly/psychobilly is more up your alley, there will be no better location in Allston tonight. Plus you get a Misfits tribute band.

(It makes think that Glenn Danzig in Santa garb could be amusing. Hold on, let me do a quick image search... Not exactly what I was hoping for since there is photoshopping at work.)

FRI 12/23

10pm
Johnny D's Holiday Party
at Johnny D's, 17 Holland St, Somerville (Davis Sq)
$10

Feat: Funky White Honkies

I think of Dinty Child in the context of playing with Session Americana and the like, but Funky White Honkies dates back to his college days. And it will be funky honkies propelling a wild dance party to shake out any holiday stress or simply have a good ol' time.

FRI 12/23

Midnight
"Silent Night, Deadly Night"
at Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline
$9

Nothing says Christmas like a department-store Santa going on a bloody murder spree to eradicate those who end up on his "naughty list"...
